Campo Grande to Santa Cruz in Bolivia - possible?

Hi all

Would appreciate your help. I am planning a 4 month trip around South America for Feb 2010 and have been told that getting from Campo Grande in Brazil to Santa Cruz in Bolivia may be difficult. I take it there is no bus system? If so, what are the best alternatives?

Can someone please advise.

Thanks very much in advance,

Megan

Not that difficult. Several buses a day between Campo Grande and Corumba along BR-262, a fully paved highway.

At Corumba, cross the river to the Bolivian side (taxi or city bus marked "fronteira" abd after Bolivian formalities a short taxi ride to Quijarro Train Station. There is a train nearly every evening for Santa Cruz but some are decidedly better: avoid the "regional" and take the "rapido" (pullman seats and dining car) or the "ferrobus" (fastest but bumpy tracks). Insect repellant is a must - the mosquitos are even in the air conditioned carriages where it's kept as cold as possible to keep the little buggers at bay. Check www.ferroviariaoriental.com for fares and schedules.

There is an unpaved road to Santa Cruz but only for the hardiest.

Train will arrive at the Santa Cruz "Bi-Modal" terminal serving buses and trains.
