Embassy Suites or Hampton Inn @King St Metro?

We will be in Old Town Alexandria for a Saturday and Sunday night in June. The rates for the Hampton Inn at the King Street Metro increase a good deal for the 2nd night we will be there. The rates for 2 nights at the Hampton are exactly the same as 2 nights at the Embassy Suites on Diagonal Road at the King St Metro. I have read that remodeling is going on at the Embassy Suites but I would imagine that would be completed by June. For the same price, would you recommend the Hampton Inn or the Embassy Suites at this location? They both seem to be located convenient to the Metro stop and to the shops and restaurants in Old Town plus there is always the DASH bus. I would appreciate any advice to help us decide. Thanks!

I just spoke with the front desk (1/29/08). We are planning a trip in April and she could not give me any dates for the completion of the remodeling work. The woman I spoke with said the lobby was almost finished but they were going to re-tile the pool. She said the internet was out and they would be giving passes to use the Hilton's pool down the street.

Thanks for the update on the remodeling. We probably won't use the pool while we are there so it shouldn't disrupt our trip too much. I called the front desk of the Embassy Suites today and given a rate of $159 per nt for both nights. I think we will go with it over the Hampton Inn.

Definitely the Embassy Suites. The Hampton Inn is nice, and above average for a Hampton Inn, but the Embassy has flat panel TV's, much better breakfasts, and is closer to the metro (but not closer to "downtown" Old Town.) As long as the renovations aren't bothering you, I would definitely go with the Embassy Suites.

I appreciate the confirmation that our decision to stay at the ES over the Hampton Inn is a good one. They have a convenient shuttle that can take us to Old Town so that shouldn't be a problem. We are planning to take the Metro from National Airport to the Embassy Suites. If you are familiar with that section of the Metro, do you remember if there are any really steep escalators to navigate with a big rolling suitcase? We would be arriving on a Saturday afternoon so hopefully the Metro shouldn't be too crowded. Thanks for any tips.

The Metro from DCA to King Street isn't bad. The south entrance to the station at the airport has an elevator (I believe) if needed, but escalator is only a short one. Likewise the stop at King Street has an elevator at the far north end of the station that has an exit that put you right across the street from the entrance of the Hilton (but puts you further anyway from the Embassy than the south exit). Escalators there are not too steep either.

Hi there, I commute with the King Street Metro so I think I can answer your question. The Embassy Suites is located DIRECTLY across the street from the metro, the Hampton Inn is just a bit further away, maybe a 5 minute walk or so including the time it takes to cross the street near the metro.

I had relatives in town in January stay at the Embassy Suites during the remodeling and it didn't bother them.

The metro ride from DCA to Alexandria is short, there are escalators and elevators at both stops I believe although there are occasional outages. The escalators are short though as both stops are above ground platforms.

Enjoy your trip!
