In December, we traveled to Austin for a day on our way to a great trip to San Antonio. We had just enough time to get an overview of the city (did the state capitol tour, drove around UT, went to Whole Foods, and had the best doughnuts of our life at Gourdough's).
We never thought we'd be back so soon but our teenager has fallen in love with an online group called Rooster Teeth and sure enough, they have a huge convention in Austin the weekend of the 4th. As a major part of her birthday, we're driving over from Florida. Yes for the weekend. Yes it is a very long way. But she's a pretty good kid and we like road trips. We arrive Thursday and will leave early Sunday. We're staying at the Omni downtown. It's not the closest to the convention center but we love that chain and we got a really good rate (club level as well). Hotel rates are pretty high that weekend so we're happy.
Any advice on 4th of July activities? I read that there will be 100,000 people at the concert. Not sure I want in the middle of those crowds after arriving mid afternoon. Anything we should see in Austin in addition to the convention? Also, any advice for what I can do while my husband and daughter are at the convention? Is public transportation doable if I wanted to head out on my own?
Thanks for any help. You were wonderful when we planned our December trip.
