Austin with toddler

Hi. We're heading to Austin this weekend for the first time and will be traveling with our 20 month old. Can anyone recommend some fun family friendly outings and also some good family friendly restaurants? We have 3 days to fit as much as we can in. We're staying at the Hyatt Regncy and won't have a car.

You'll be within walking distance of the Austin Children's Museum austinkids.org and outside of the Long Center/Palmer events center is the Liz Carpenter fountain that kids love to run through and play in (it's encouraged!). After that, you could stop at Sandy's (603 Barton Springs Road) for a frozen custard or sundae -- and/or one of trailers along Barton Springs for a snow cone. Although there's all kinds of restaurants in Austin with playscapes, I can't think of any in that immediate area. Threadgills threadgills.com is good just because it's noisy, casual and there's great food (and sometime music). Gueros on South Congress is family friendly (loud, casual and music outside). You could check with Capital Cruises capitalcruises.com for bat watching or rent one of their swan boats or pedal boats.

Thank you so much they're great places for us to start. We're looking forward to trying the local food as we've never been to Texas before. Outing ideas look great too.

You've been given some good suggestions and the staff at the Hyatt Regency will be helpful with ideas and maps.

Keep in mind it will be hotter weather here than you may be used to in London. So some of the ideas suggested for the weekend may require a short cab ride instead of walking.

Be sure and keep lots of water available for you and your toddler!

Welcome to Austin!

All good suggestions above. Look at this website:

http://www.2ndstreetdistrict.com/

It is downtown and begins at Congress Ave and 2nd Street. Congress Ave is a street then runs down the middle of downtown.

This one year old 2nd St. District is treelined for 3 blocks and very inviting. It is lined with shops and restaurants. There are many eateries that allow you to order at the counter and then take your tray outside and eat/drink and people watch. There is also a frozen yogurt shop that is very cute. It's walls are loaded with broken antique china murals.

I also recommend Threadgill's as someone did above. Nice Texas memorialbilia on walls and good Texas chow! Your hotel also has nice restaurant and is famous for it's Mexican fajita's.

The Texas History Museum would be fun for you and hubby and toddler could stroll with you. They also have a nice quick bite cafe on 2nd floor and it is also the home of IMAX in case you want to cool off for an hour. http://www.thestoryoftexas.com/
