Hotel suggestions for a short weekend trip?

My husband and i are coming to Austin for a weekend in May and I'm trying to decide whether or not it's worth the extra money to stay downtown. We'll be heading to San Antonio for a couple of days, so we'll need to rent a car, in which case, we don't necessarily need to be within walking distance to all of the downtown attractions. Having never been to Austin, I'm not sure what traffic and parking situations are like. We don't need top of the line accommodations, but definitely want at least a 3 star hotel in a decent area. Should we just bite the bullet and stay downtown, possibly waiting until we leave for SA to rent a car, or are there good choices for hotels close enough with easy access to the city?

I love the new 2nd street district downtown. Lot's of shops and restaurants and new movie theatre. Totally tree lined and lots of outdoor cafes. Very unique.

It begins at the corner of 2nd and Congress Ave (main dt street) and is one block from Lady Bird Lake and also next to the Warehouse District which has more restaurants and nicer clubs for us "older folk".
