Visiting Austin with teen

I will be visiting Austin late March with my 17 y.o. daughter...we both love live music but of course she is too young for the bar scene and I don't particularily enjoy it anymore myself...are there any venues for mom and daughter to enjoy anything but country music...also, would appreciate any other suggestions things to do while there...Thanx

Many of the music venues are all ages shows. The Austin Chronicle has all of the listings. The Cactus www.utexas.edu/student/txunion/ae/cactus/ on the UT campus is a great venue. Others that I'd check out are:

Broken Spoke http://www.brokenspokeaustintx.com/

The Continental Club http://www.continentalclub.com/

Emos http://www.emosaustin.com/

Don't totally discount the "bar scene" if you are really interested in live music. There are quite a few places in the Warehouse district as well as 6th Street which offer talented people in a wide variety of musical styles. You can always go fairly early, walk down the streets and listen to see if there is something you might want to try. Depending on the venue, some will let a 17 year old in with a parent. Threadgills is usually fairly laid back- you can check their website and call to be sure it's OK for a teen to come. (www.threadgills.com)

Check out Stubb's BBQ.

They have a gospel brunch on Sundays, and music other than country during the week. Check the website for the schedule.

Please write back and let us know how your trip works out. The Austin forum gets this sort of question quite a bit and it would be nice to hear some real-life, current experiences.

Switchfoot plays La Zona Rosa on 3/24. Very teen friendly show. I would recommend that one if this happens to be your weekend in late March. If you guys like Country, you might look at Nutty Brown as well.

is the web site for the free weekly newspaper here in Austin. It's published on Thursdays and is in stands, grocery stores, etc around the city. It does a great job of describing most of the clubs, type of music and who'll be playing there over the weekend.

The Thursday Austin Statesmen www.austinstatesmen has a section called Xlent that gives the weekend news on festivals, clubs etc.

Both of those resources will help you do some preplanning and have a great trip!

Remember that we're spoiled in Austin. Almost any time we go to dinner over the weekend, we'll expect live music at the restaurant. And that even includes patios at places like Whole foods and Central Market. don't overlook anything!
