Passing through Amarillo on way to Sante Fe

Hello

Please can I have some advice. We are driving from Wild Catter Ranch in Graham Tx to Sante Fe and passing though Amarillo. We have daughters aged 6 years. We were thinking of spending 3 nights in Amarillo. Is this too much? What age appropiate activities are there for children?

Alternatively could someone recommend a drive itinerary for us?

What time of year are you coming? 3 nights Amarillo would be 2 night too many for us. There really is not that much to do with a 6 yo. If you want to stay longer in that area I suggest to stay at Palo Duro Canyon SP where you can hike and make scenic drives. That SP is lovely.

1 night Amarillo,1 night Red River, NM, 1 night Taos , NM then to Santa Fe. You can't go all that way and miss that area. Although a hotel might be problem.

Just east of Albuquerque is Sandia Peak Tramway. A stunning ride and from there to Santa Fe you can take scenic Turquoise Trail nm14.

There is a small theme park in Amarillo. Its good for half a day or so. Its only open during the summer, I believe.

You and your daughters might enjoy seeing the Texas State Bison herd at the beautiful Caprock Canyons State Park at Quitaque. If you take hwy 82 West through Guthrie you'll pass the headquarters of the 6666 Ranch, one of the largest in Texas. tpwd.state.tx.us/state-parks/caprock-canyons

Allow a couple of hours for the extra drive time and spending some time in the park. Drive on to Canyon on Interstate 27 to spend the night. Next day see Palo Duro Canyon and perhaps pay a visit to the Panhandle-Plains Museum in Canyon.

I'll mention that the entire area through which you will drive on the way to Amarillo was once the territory of the Comanches and Kiowas who hunted the millions of bison which once roamed there. The tribes provided stiff resistance to the invading Anglo settlers with many atrocities by both sides. This was the Wild West. The Battle of Palo Duro Canyon in 1873 saw the defeat of the tribes by the US Army and opened the southern plains to settlement, farming and ranching.
