i only been twice spending one evening & a full day there but it certainly doesnt give the impression of being safe an armed guard on the metro would suggest not .but every big city has its share of crime. to be honest i was expecting something to happen on the jeepney ,metro but it didnt.things can happen anywhere.

Manila is no safer or less than any major city in America.

Just use your head like always and you will be ok.

fspr01 - despite our differences - i have actually recommended some one tour with you for safety and a good tour - you better give a really good few days is all i can say -

boracay - it is one of the best places i have ever been, ever - no probs there.

though with all the building it could become another surfers paradise - as in oz ,, that would be a very sad situation.

check out puka beach, go left and swim to the second headland - better tahn anything in oz!

doh! i meant go right, take sandals for the sharp rocks...

What I said is true - only idiots get mugged in the Philippines because they are in an place that it is inadvisable to go or they have had to much to drink!

And the same probably goes for other countries also.

Wherever you live, you know where to avoid.

Everyone has a duty to themselves and their families to keep safe.

People who get bags stolen on jeepneys or have bags snatched have been robbed and not mugged and I challenge you to name a foreigner in the last 3 years who has been robbed in this way or had bags or pockets slashed.

Jeepneys do get robbed but it is usually in Tondo or around Commonwealth in Quezon City and it is unlikely to be foreigners traveling those routes.

Many times I have said that the Philippines is more dangerous for Filipinos than foreigners!

Now name one one foreigner who has been kidnapped in Manila!

Chinese Filipinos are the favourite victims and they live here!

Many politicians are crooked and they are looking for campaign funds and a Chinese Filipino business man has more chance of raising a ransom than a tourist.

I do know what goes on here. Besides reading local papers and internet reports, I also listen to the radio and I also have many police friends who tell me what is going on.

Finally, I am English, not Filipino and I never was mugged in my life because I never put myself at risk by going in places I knew or was advised were dangerous.

People who get robbed are usually unfortunate but sometimes careless. People who get mugged are not in the same category.
