I'm in Sydney Australia, and I actually booked our trip to Anantara Dhigu for April through a travel agent in the USA called Linara Travel. They were by far the best priced of any of the agents I could find, beat prices on any Australian agents, any of the agents in the Maldives, and anywhere else I looked. I do a LOT of research before I book and Justin at Linara Travel was just outstanding. I would VERY highly recommend them.

Having said that, we are getting married in 3 and a half weeks so haven't been on the honeymoon yet, my review may change!! :) Just kidding... they have been brilliant!

I believe it's justin @ linaratravel.com, he's definitely worth a try. Let him know I referred you if you like, Mark from Sydney, he won't forget me I was a right pain in his butt!! lol

We are also traveling from the US. We originally called Linara Travel and had several quotes sent to us. After reading here on the forum, we found Atoll Paradise. We are booking through them today for travel in June. In my opinion, Atoll is a better fit for us. They offered better rates than Linara did on the resorts we picked. I just felt Linara was a little short with us and kinda snobbish. Atoll has been great and very friendly. They answer my emails right away and if our agent is not available right away, someone contacts me on her behalf. They have not been pushy at all and very patient with me. I would check with both of them and then you can judge for yourself which is better suited for you. We booked our flight seperately with Emirates from JFK since we are doing a few days in Dubai before our Maldives stay. Good Luck! Happy Travels....

Actually I'll add to my comments, I also tried Atoll Paradise and did find them very friendly as well I'd say you'd be reasonably safe dealing with either agent. However we did personally find that Linara got us better rates on our choices. Where they were really good was recommending properties to us with no pressure, they know many of the properties really well and were great for advice and guidance. At one point the prices were close with another agent, Linara were happy to work on price and got us an even better deal. For me, I did fond Atoll were a little pushy with us, but certainly very polite and friendly also.

Didn't have any of the snobby issues with Justin from Linara, he was very down to earth with us and only too happy to help. No pushing when we went away for a while to think about it, just really easy to deal with.

Does sound like either agents could be a good choice, both have their pros and cons, I have never seen a bad word about either of them which is a good sign.

One thing with Linara, we too are spending a few days in Dubai prior to our honeymoon in the Maldives (25 days remaining and counting) and knew Linara does accom in Dubai as well. They recommended a property to us, we looked into it, they were unable to meet the advance purchase rate of the hotel (agents never can) however they still recommended the property as the right place for us even though they knew we wouldn't be booking through them. That, to me, was good customer service.

Give them both a try, let them both know you're shopping around, and let us know how you get on!

4. Re: Who are the USA to Maldives Specialist Travel Agents??

I just returned from a 2 week trip to Dubai and The Maldives. We live outside of NYC and flew Emirates from JFK.

I did extensive research prior to booking this trip, and I booked everything myself separately. It was a very easy process. I found virtually no air + hotel packages from the US, and the island we ultimately chose does not partner with airlines or tour operators.

While there are Maldivian resorts that are less expensive than others, this is not a value destination (for Americans) and the prices reflect this. Unfortunately, the idea of getting "bang for the buck" is not a concept that really applies here.

From the NYC area, the easiest way to get to The Maldives is via Emirates through Dubai. We chose to spend three days in Dubai prior to heading on to The Maldives, and I am very glad we did. Emirates flies to Dubai via Houston, San Francisco and Los Angeles also. There are two daily Emirates flights from JFK, and the midnight flight is on the A380. It was a nice experience to fly this aircraft as the ride is very quiet and very smooth.

You can also take Qatar Airways from Washington, DC via Doha.

It's a very long trip for us, but well worth it! Make sure to choose your Maldivian island very carefully to ensure a good fit for your travel style.

I hope you have a great honeymoon.

I agree with the poster that did not get good vibes from Linara. Neither did I. After much research I booked with Michelle at Scaevola Travel, based in Male. She is from UK but lives in Male and knows all the local operators. I could not connect with any of the UK package agencies. They would not even answer my emails.

We just returned from the Maldives, traveling from Singapore and Western US. PM me for more info, if you like.

USA agencies just do not have the right kind of "hands on" Maldives expertise to help you with Maldivian Island Resort queries. The best option is to choose a Male' based agency such as Scaevola Travel, who by being on the spot, industry experienced and know the destination thoroughly are able to match your dream holiday with your dream tropical island expectations..

I agree with Spammie regarding booking the hotel and air fare yourself.

I will say this, though, in terms of booking the hotel I used Expedia and I got an amazing deal on the hotel. You just have to check it every couple of days because often when they have deals they are only for a couple of days. Granted it was 3 years ago now, but I got a overwater villa at Anantara Veli for $210 a night. (This was during May and June) Also if you subscribe to newsletters like Jetsetter.com there are some pretty good deals that come through here and again. The same villa was $295 during the month of June this year.
