Suggestions about my KL trip planning? |
|
Hello, I will be visiting KL for first time for 4 days in KL. We are family of 5 including 3 small children. Please review my plan and let me know if you think it makes sense especially since all my kids are under 6. Day 1 - Arrive in KL afternoon around 4 p.m. After check in and rest, take a stroll in Chinatown Petailing Street in evening. Eat barbeque meat (sate) or anything else exciting from food stall in the area. Day 2 - Taxi to Sunway Lagoon. Enjoy shows, kids play in water and have Lunch there. Plan to be back by 3 p.m. After some rest, hop on taxi to Berjaya Times Square for kids to play in indoor theme park. Proceed to Bukit Bintang for dinner in outdoor food stall or if too crowded for kids, eat in restaurant nearby. Day 3 - Taxi from KL to Batu Caves. Proceed with same taxi to Genting Highlands. Take 5 p.m. bus back to KL. After some rest, taxi to Little India area. Explore area, some shopping in Mustafa Center. Dinner in a nice Indian restaurant nearby. Day 4 - Taxi to Petronas. Try to get tickets for tour. If line is too long fo kids, skip tour and proceed to Aquaria nearby. Have lunch in Suria Mall. After some rest, taxi to Islamic Museum. Dinner in hotel restaurant. |

Are any of your kids in strollers? If so, KL is not easy with a kids buggy. 1. depends on where your hotel is? How long you flight has been - Jet lag etc. You might find it easier to eat in your hotel.....esp, if it has a pool. 2. Sunway - OK Times square - your kids might be too tired after Sunway. Times Sq is a short wander to BB - Jln Alor for food (next to KFC). 3. Batu Caves - fine, but you have to climb LOTS of steps... think it is 175. Why go to Genting? it's a 'theame' park and not that good compared to those in the USA. Why not think about KL bird park - that is fun and interesting. Also, means less travel. Little India - will your children eat spicy food? 4. Petrons - The view from The KL Tower is much better than from Petronas where you only go to the 'bridge'. If you are set on Petronas Twin Towers, get there for 8.00am to make sure you get tickets. Near to Petronas is a public play area/ paddling pool for kids - great fun to let them run wild. Lunch in Suria - ok. Not sure that taking small children to a museum is such a good idea..... I seem to remember mine at that age haveing the attention span of a goldfish.... after a few minutes, they want to take the museum to pieces. Bit by bit.

Hi The most important thing is keep your son happy and enterained! So I’ve got to go along with Escor’. Happy kids equals happy parents! KL will keep you, and more importantly, a 9 year old boy entertained for a few days. Do pick a hotel with a good pool, kids and water are always a great mix. You will get Satay every where in KL - some good some ok, and some indifferent. Chinatown/Petaling Street/night market/street food - kids might find it a bit claustrophic - very crowded at night. Sunway has 4 parks, so you might want to skip Times square - check out the sunway website for info http://www.sunwaylagoon.com/ you might end up spending all day there. Bukitt Bintang shops and malls, restaurants, bars/Jalan Alor street food - might be a bit crowd for the kids - try the food court in the Pavillion Mall - very nice, loads of choice and clean. The food floor in the Starhill Gallery is always worth a visit - great restaurants. Petronas Towers/KLCC shopping/ Petrosains Discovery Centre/Kuala Lumpur City Centre park / Aqurium - it’s a must of modern Malaysian excellence. Nice area of town to stroll round. But you only get to the 41/42nd floor/skybride on the tour and have to get there early. Menara [KL] Tower – at the top of Bukit Nanas (Pineapple Hill), a forest reserve right in the heart of the city. Views from the Tower are far superior than those from the Petronas Towers. There is also a restaurant which is very average but does offer a revolving view of the city. Benefits are you can go when you want and stay as long as you want to enjoy the fab views. Nice little cafe and some shops at the base of the tower. have you looked at Central Market/Independence Square/Sultan Abdul building/Royal Selangor Club/Kuala Lumpur Railway Station - Colonial heritage Lake Gardens/Orchid & Hibiscus Gardens/Bird-Butterfly-Deer parks – INTERESTING DAY OUT WITH KIDS easy taxi ride Batu Caves – A lot of stairs for a heathly adult let alone 3 young children. The statue outside with the view of the stairs is the best bet to be honest. Genting Highlands, theme park, casino – Sunway is probally better and easier. You might find the Indian restaurants in Bangsar or Brickfields better. But the food court in the Starhill gallery in Bukit Bintang has some great restaurants - often rated the best in KL. We eat street food, never been ill. As long as the food is HOT (in temperature – the hot spice is optional!), freshly cooked, looks and smells good. We always take tummy remedies, for stopping and going! We also take small bottles of had wash gel (similar t the stuff you get in hospital) useful for adults let a children!!!!!!!!! Happy planning, always happy to help.

PS, sorry if I mention a 9yo son, but I pinched the post from a question I had answered earlier in the year, and as much of the answer applied, saved on my typing! So sorry if this might cause confusion. There is lots that the children will enjoy in KL.

Thanks for your suggestions. I agree kids will be tired after Sunway Lagoon. So I will take them to Berjaya Times Square following day. I might also skip Batu caves since kids won't be able to climb all those hundreds of steps. Is KL Bird Park good as the one in Singapore?
|
Hi The Jurong Bird Park in Singapore is very sophisticated and a very well run enterprise – as you would expect in Singapore. Bird Park in KL can seem a poor relative if directly compared to it. The Bird Park in KL is a good day out if mixed with the Butterfly Park, Deer Park and Orchid/Hibiscus Gardens etc. I found the walk-in aviary very nice and well done, giving you a feeling of being in the jungle. Think you have made the right decision with Batu Caves - I would not want to take our granddaughters there.
|
It seems you're already leaning that way, but scrapping the Times Square after Sunway isn't a bad idea. Also, the Batu Caves for kids is a really good or bad idea. Depends on how hot it is and how much energy they have. Also, Day 3 seems impossibly crowded. It wouldn't be enjoyable for anyone. The suggestion of the Lake Gardens area, (Bird Park, Butterfly park, Orchids, etc. etc.) is a good one for families with little kids. Saving comparisons, the kids will enjoy the bird park.

I do have the following suggestion Day one, assuming you flew from Texas to KL, arriving around 4 pm with kids, a china town trip will be extremely ambitious, given how tired and jet lagged you will be, china town will be busy, and hectic and no air condition.I would suggest that you do this in another day. my self, I will do one of the following a. hang around the hotel, short walk etc, light dinner, and go to sleep. or b. take a taxi, to Klcc area, visit mall etc. or c. take a taxi, to Menara KL, http://www.menarakl.com.my/ this should be very nice and less taxing after long flight, it will also orient you the entire city, if truly in the mood try the restaurant there. if you visit Menara KL, there is absolutely no need to actually do the petronas tower later on i.e. the view from menara KL is much more superior. Day two is Ok Day three, I suggest a. morning, visit the bird park, and then visit the close by islamic museum b. mid day, mall activity in BB area or may be Central market it is different. c. afternoon, evening, little india area etc. Day four, leave it open to your discretion based on what you came to know about the city at that time.

Hi there Murada I agree with others I have just returned from KL and Petaling Street (Chinatown)is a nightmare in the evening, I found it really awful, very hot and no room to move between the stalls. If you want to go try the afternoon, it is much less crowded mid afternoon. Batu Caves is amazing but would be difficult with all the steps. We lined up for tickets for the Petronas Skybridge at about 8.45am on a Wednesday, it took about a half hour to get to the counter. Really worthwhile, the views are great, we also went to the revolving restaurant at the KL Menara tower where the views are even better. My son loved both of them. Have a great trip, make sure you plan for plenty of rests in the air/con in the middle of the day the heat at that time can be quite overbearing. We loved KL, cannot wait to go back !!
|
Thanks again for your suggestions. I will then postpone going to Petaling street on the evening of the day we arrive. Since we will be staying close to Chinatown, we will maybe tour Petaling street the next morning. I really want to experience eating out in outdoor food stall in KL and want my kids to experience this also. We always eat in restaurant or mall here in Texas since outside food stalls are non existent. Where in KL do you guys.gals recommend that I can take my family for a stroll and have a nice meal in an outdoor stall (I believe they are called mamak stall right?)

Hi thereWe were in KL for a few days at Christmas.I would give Batu Caves a big miss especially with 3 small children - it is incredibly filthy and the steps are so steep and once you get up there the children have no appreciation for the view what so ever. I would go to the bird park instead which is fabulous. There is a fantastic little cafe there - very good nasi goreng and satay stick and my kids loved it - very cheap too.Genting is ok but if you don't make it don't worry - it is just like another huge shopping centre full of boring and expensive fast food cafes. The cable car ride is fabulous though. We missed out on the Petronas tour due to it being incredibly crowded for school holidays even though we queued three times from 7am. Aquaria is good.Best of travels. Suzanne
