Sake Brewery & Whiskey Brewery

Hello All,

Heading to Japan in two weeks. Will be in Tokyo for 6 days, and Kyoto for 3. While in Kyoto I'm hoping to tour/taste at a sake brewery and whiskey brewery. Could you kindly make some suggestions?

I am a fan of Hibiki whiskey, so that would be awesome if they are located neat by.

Thanks for the help!

Start with the easy one: Suntory yamazaki is located in between Kyoto and Osaka. You can aceess via Tokaido Line train from Kyoto in 15 min.

Fushimi in Kyoto is the historical place to sakeries. I have visited a couple of sakeries in Fushimi in 2010. Bothe are located south of Kintetsu satation in the same neibourhood.

Some of them are not opened to public, but a couple of them have museums, show rooms and restaurants: One of the biggest sakeries in Japan, Ohkura Sakery, which produces Gekkeikan. Gekkeikan Museum has a small amount of tasting.

The other is Kizakura Sakery with Kappa Country Museum. Kizakura does not have free sampling.

Both are located near Kintetsu Momoyama-Goryo station and Keihan Fushimi Momoyama station. Unfortunately, I am unable to locate a good map for both. Gekkeikan map is inserted above:

Click X in the upper right corner for the map. You may find Gekkikan Sake Museum also in a little south, actually one block down to south. I hear the restaurant named Torisei is a good Yakitori bar:

I also remembered one other sakery museum in downtown Kyoto, Horino Museum by Kinshi Masamune Sakery; but I have not tried.

Is this in English?

Tasting is available with 300 Yen.

Kanto region:

You need excellent water quality, Tokyo is not renowned for this but other parts of Kanto are, this website may be helpful for Sake www.japannavigator.com/p/sake-regions.html

A neighbouring prefecture to Tokyo is Saitama, home to many, many sake breweries. See them listed here

We enjoyed Geikkikan Museum and tasting. About a 15m train ride from the center of Kyoto, very easy on local trains. Not a lot of sake to taste but enough to figure out which ones you want to buy.

If you come from Kyoto Station, take the Kintetsu train to Momoyama Goryomae station; If you come from Gion area, take the Keihan train from Gion Shijo, Sanjo, Kiyomizu Gojo and get off at Fushimi Momoyama.

The main attractions in the vicinity is shown here in English map: otesuji.jp/english/…map_english.jpg

The map is provided by the Otesuji Shopping Arcade which has a small page in English: http://otesuji.jp/english

Fushimi is now a quaint Kyoto suburb, but once it had a major castle in the hills in which the second of the great unifiers, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, lived in retirement and gathered all major vassal warlords in the town while Osaka Castle was in construction. The canals system and the narrow yet grid patterned streets of Fushimi are the remains of the Hideyoshi era.

I never went to Suntory Yamazaki distillation field(joryu-jo) .

If you go, I will also suggest to go to Asahi beer Villa Museum of Art.

There is one of my favorite museums in me.

I drink Asahi beer (surcharge) at the cafe. There seems to be cider.

Gekkeikan Memorial Fushimi was also good.

You can sample sake.

Suntory in Yamazaki is compact but pretty and nice place to visit as a group. Nice walk from the station, particularly in Cherry blossom season.

Kyoto has several breweries.

you can visit to sake , beer , whiskey breweries.

many ppl mentioned yamazaki distillery is the best. for beer is suntory brewery where is located near by nagaokakyo station. i am sure sake is in fushimi where is gekkeikan okura kinenkan. you can try 3 types of sake there. if you wanna try some more, you can go to ootesuji shopping arcade. there is aburacho sake store. you can choose 3 sake in 70 then try them.

if you wanna join a tour, here is the best

enjoy your trip!
