Ryokan Rikiya or Yuhara? Info needed quickly.

I've been trying really hard to find a ryokan in Kyoto that is a good deal -- nice but not really expensive -- for me & my travel buddy (not my romantic partner). Originally I had my heart set on Heinbo, but there are no rooms available. Then I checked out another... and another... No vacancies. Finally I just had to start sending out requests to every ryokan I could find in the city.

Now I have finally found 2 places with openings for me for my 4 day stay -- Rikiya and Yuhara. The Rikiya has a room with a private bathroom, which is really a plus. But if the other was significantly better/nicer, then I'd rather stay there. I *think* I would prefer the location of Rikiya, but it's so hard to know for sure without ever having been to Kyoto.

Because of the way I had to send out so many requests, I have reservations in both places right now. I need to cancel one quickly. Even though it's 2 months away, I feel bad for possibly keeping either of them from booking another guest in the meantime.

Does anyone have any experience with either of these or both?

I am not familiar with either of the ryokan you have listed above, however I live in Kyoto and definitely think that the Rikiya is in a better location - that area is lovely & is easy walking distance to the main sights. The streets nearby have a distinct "Japanese" feel - I love it around there (some are cobblestoned & don't get much traffic & most are narrow).

You're right between Yasaka Shrine & Kiyomizudera (temple) - 2 must see spots - and also near that area are Chion-in temple, Maruyama Park, Kodaiji Temple & the beautiful Hanamikoji St - lined with old Japanese houses (machiya) & teahouses. Definitely take a stroll down there, you will not be disappointed.

From what I can see online, Yuhara is closer to Kyoto station? (the site I saw said 13min walk) - in my opinion there is nothing nearby of interest in comparison & in general the streets are fairly ordinary.

But I am only going on the locations because as I said, I am not familiar with either of the ryokans specifically. Hope that helps - & have a great time in Kyoto, you'll love it!

Fantastic! Thank you so much! That's exactly the kind of information I needed to make my decision. I am SO looking forward to my trip to Kyoto.

We're just back from Japan and stayed for 2 nights at the Ryokan Riyika for 16,000 yens per room (w/o bath) or 19,000 (w / bath). the place is extremely quiet, in a romantic setting and couldn't feel more "old Japan" including the 2 old ladies who run the place. To reach it grab a North-Eastern bound bus 206 at bus stand D1 (not A3 which is the loading point for the North-Western bound bus) at the northern exit of the rail station and get off at Higashiyama-Yasui (9th stop). then walk back to the first traffic light and turn left, uphill, under the torii. The fare is 220 yens one way but you can buy a day pass for 500 yens (including a very helpful bus map in English) from the tourist office inside the rail station.
