are the taxis fees per person or per tax? If we wanted to take a taxi from golden pavilion across the city to Kiyomizu-dera, what would the cost be for 3 people? I am sure the bus would be cheaper but if

we are pressed for time and decide to taxi.

>>The fare is not by person. It'll be close to 2,500 yen for 3. The buses in Kyoto is slow and tedious and it's a good idea to take a cab sometimes.

It's quite all right paying the fare the way you do in your country. Never heard about a cab driver collecting the fare on a per-passenger basis... Depends on traffic and the size of a vehicle, and I may be a bit off the mark about this, but sometimes you'd end up paying a bit more than 3000yens. There seem to be tourists making use of a subway and a cab. If you cab it from Golden Pavilion to Subway Kitaoji and get off at Subway Gojo, maybe you'll save half that amount.

Sorry Guys,, know its an old thread but information may still be relevant.

we recently had to catch taxis from Westin Miyako back to Kyoto Station (to organize tickets). The taxi drive happened to speak English very well and offered to be our tour guide for some of the tourist sights. The meter is kept running but at a slightly lower rate. So he had to wait for us to organize our tickets at the station then drove us to Golden Pavillion and Rock Gardens where he acted as our guide....we then had to return to the other side of town to Kiyomizudera and he gave us a taxis tour (with our permission) through Gion and through traditional streets, landmarks and buildings. He dropped us off at kiyomizudera. The trip cost $150 or 150 000 yen...we found that very reasonable for many reasons one being 'private tour ' and any other tours would have cost as hundereds per person. We found taxis very convenient and reasonable usually $6.40 or 640 yen never paying any more than $10 or 10 000 yen for runaround trips.
