Last trains from Osaka

What time does the last train leave from Kyoto to get to Osaka (and the other way around from Osaka to Kyoto). We want to go out at night in Kyoto but would prefer to stay in Osaka. Trying to work out which city is best to stay in.

Perhaps I should ask what time the first trains are too!

Am I allowed to know which of the following you have in mind:

2)Hankyu Railways

3)Keihan Railways

Note: depends perhaps on where in Kyoto you will be at night, but #2 and #3 have railroad stations located respectively nearby Kawaramachi and Gion, both of which are a biggest entertainment district in central Kyoto.

I should possibly be a bit biased to ask this, but isn't it main part of your idea heading for that area?

www.hyperdia.com (click on English) shows the last train from Kyoto station to Osaka station leaving at 12:15 at night. The last direct train in the opposite direction leaves Osaka at 11:53. Personally if you're looking for night life and expect to stay out late I'd say stay in wherever you are. For one thing it's easier, and both places have good bars/restaurants in which to enjoy yourself, and it's much easier to enjoy yourself if you're not worried about catching the last train home (and it's an expensive taxi ride).

FYI, the last Hankyu train starts from Kawaramachi for Umeda Osaka at 2330; at 2344 the last subway on Karasuma Line (Kyoto) leaves Shijo, which is walk-able from Kawaramachi, for JR Kyoto.

One thing to note is, be it JR, Hankyu or Keihan you take from Kyoto, it'd be too late by the time you ride back here in any train to catch the last subway / JR Loop Line running in Osaka . So, it'll be vital for you to book a hotel within walking distance from JR Osaka, Hankyu Umeda, or JR Shin-Osaka, if you intend to stay in Osaka at all.

Good luck.
