Hi, we are going to Japan in May and are starting to get confused about the rail passes, at the moment we are starting in Tokyo for 2 days then planning on going to Kyoto for 5 days during which we would like to do Hiroshimo and Miyajima Island, in total we will be over there for 3 weeks. Any suggestions about accomodation, [Ryokan] also any suggestions about other places to see

The most effective itinerary should be:

-Flying into Tokyo and Flying out from Osaka. (Ot vice versa)

-Staying in Tokyo for first 4 days then activate JR Pass to start long distance trips

-After visiting wherever you plan to visit, you finally reach Osaka and Kyoto and spend 5 days there

-Leave out from Kansai Airport.

The thing is JR pass should be used for long distance travels. It never pays off for the metropolitan transport only.

There are several very good places to stay on Miyajima. If you'd like a splurge, I would recommend Iwaso Ryokan.

More exploration of the various sections of TA will result in lots of ideas, too.

I have recently spent 14 days in Japan with a group of friends , the itinerary planned between the group and KNT Kintetsu International, Kyoto . Their prices were very reasonable and the itinerary planned was excellent , with some flexibility for changes during the tour . We had excellent guides and professionalism throughout. We had contact with Kana Torii gpfrom the travel agency and we cannot recommend her highly enough

I agree with Nao's Japan Rail Pass strategy. Use the rail pass during your period of long-distance intercity travel. The rail pass is not cost-effective within Tokyo or within the Osaka-Kyoto area, so use it for your big trips in the middle of your vacation. So if you arrange your trip to (1) start in Tokyo, (2) do long-distance travel, and (3) end in Osaka-Kyoto area, you will need the rail pass only for section (2) of your trip.

You could probably spend another couple of days in Tokyo. Pick some other destinations depending on your interests--I like Takamatsu (gateway to Naoshima), Matsue, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Kanazawa, and Takayama.
