Department store closure in December/January

Currently planning to be in Tomamu 23-27 Dec and Sapporo 27 Dec - 2 Jan. Will department stores (Tokyu, Mitsukoshi, Daimaru) be closed during this period? I'm trying to both ski at Tomamu before the rate hikes near Christmas and stay at Sapporo when stores are still open!

Thanks!

Yes. Please check the corresponding department websites. Mitsukoshi has English website. All department stores have similar closings during that period.

Most departmental stores close early on 31 Dec. On 1 Jan, most of them are closed too.

Restaurants are mostly closed too so be prepared to eat in fast food restaurants.

I never had to eat at fast food restaurants or convenient stores on Dec 31 or Jan 1.

There will be restaurants open. Jan 1 itself would be rather quiet though since most shops will be closed. Head for a shrine or plan to visit sights that aren't closed on that day.
