1. Re: high speed train Shanghai - Kunming

Up to 2013.04.08 info, the Shanghai - Kunming high speed train will brought into service by the end of 2014.

Currently, Shanghai- Hangzhou has G-train while Shanghai- Changsha has D-train.

It's said 2015. Shanghai-Hangzhou high Speed is part of it, already opened for years. Hangzhou-Changsha isn't high speed.

There is no worldwide definition on the ‘high speed train’.

In China, re the website of the ‘Ministry of Transport of the People’s Republic of China’ or the ex-‘Ministry of Railways of the People’s Republic of China’ also don’t have solid definition.

Generic term CRH; China Railway High-speed, commonly used for the train engine which maximum speed reaches 200KMH or above. Under this criterion, all CRH1~CRH6 (except CRH6 Quasi High-speed version) are classified as ‘high speed train’ in China.

Nowadays, CRHx uses in C-train, D-train and G-train. I understand different people have different understanding, that’s why I split ‘Shanghai- Changsha has D-train’.

O...ops, the hyperlink doesn't work.

So for the 'map of the faster railways', please;

1. Open http://seat61.com/China.htm#.UWXPXlcfg38

2. Go to 'Maps of the Chinese train network...'

3. Click www.johomaps.com/as/china/chinarail.html

4. A map show at www.johomaps.com/as/china/chinarail.html

5. On the top, click [High Speed Rail Map]

6. At the bottom, select language. (English/Chinese)

Interest, you can open the map when click '1', '3', '4' as well.

8. Re: high speed train Shanghai - Kunming

I don't understand the answers about Hangzhou and Changsha when the question is about Kunming?

Fast is a relative concept. It has to do with the speed of the train and the number of stops. The faster trains are the G trains. Some other trains can be considered fast because the make few or no stops before the final destination.

Only the Chinese website has a reliable schedule but cnvol is pretty good and usually updated on a timely basis. Their prices are often wrong though.

Thanks for the interesting links although these sites are very slow (at least here in China).
