Beijing to Xi'an, TCW+, on to Shanghai that day?

Planning on taking Z19 sleeper train from Beijing arriving Xi'an Main Station at 7:58 am, leaving luggage at station, then taking bus to Terra Cotta Warriors and bus back to station. We don't think it's a problem to do this and catch the Z94 sleeper train at 5:08 pm to Shanghai and maybe even take in another site.

However, we are also thinking about spending even more time in Xi'an by retrieving our bags and leave on the higher speed D308 sleeper at 9:08 pm from Xi'an North Station which will still put us within minutes of our original arrival in Shanghai. We're hoping the extra 4 hours allows a better sight-seeing experience.

I understand the Metro 2 line runs to the North station. Is it a hassle to walk to the Metro line from the Main Station? Is there adequate English available on the metro or must I count the stops? Google maps indicates it's about a mile west and north to the stop but I'd rather have someone who has transferred stations give me their advice. We would take a cab but would prefer a more local flair if it doesn't create confusion or hassle.

Suggestions on our plan and/or station transfer?

The subway is very simple to navigate. However, the Shanghai main station is not near the subway.

Most people will make their last stop of Xian at Mulism Quarter. Allow at least 15 min from Drum Tower to subway stop named Bell Tower. Subway takes you to Xian North for half hr.

If leaving from Xian Main Train station, you can't walk, only take a taxi with surely overpriced rate to Anyuanmen subway. If no jam, you get here in 15 min. Then about 20 min to Xian North. Taxi driver may push you to use their service until the North Station.

Like your orignial plan take the train leave for shanghai at 5:10p.m, one thing you need focus on the right bus ( green 306 bus) you will use to the warriors museum not others, that can help you arrive at the warrior museum on time about one hour drive.

Life you stay more longer in the city, that is easy, after sightseeing the warrior and wall, and the great mosque and dinner at the Muslim street in the city , you can take the public bus 603 or 611 to reach the main station again from the bell tower, Bring your luggage if not much, you only just walk go along the city wall to the west about one bus station,( 10-15 minutes ). You will see the main of the wall( north gate,安远门)where you will take the metro to the north train station which is final station about 25 minutes ride.

Hope this can help

In order to save money(one night in the train, not in hotel, even from Xi'an to Shanghai),The arrangement (train station---warriors--train station is perfact. If you want to see more sites in Xi'an during 7 or 8 hours,Better to hire an english speaking driver. He will take you and your luggage to visit Warriors and main sites and take you back train station to get you train for Shanghai. Thanks beiping w
