Train or Fly to Shanghai

We were contemplating the overnight train to Shanghai (soft sleeper) in March 2013 as we like train travel but some posts suggest that the berths are very hard and it's not a comfortable trip. Money is not an issue - it's purely would the train be an enjoyable comfortable trip or not? Anyone who has done the trip and can offer advice - it would be appreciated. Thanks.

Xi'an North Station--Shanghai , the new train D 308 shorten travel time from more than14 hours to10hours, which starts operation on this December 20. just second class seat and soft sleeper berth. you will feel very comfortable surly.

the departure time at 21:02 (Xi'an North Station)

the arrival time at 07:48 (Shanghai Station).

Still, different people will have different thoughts. But it's true soft sleeper (in normal trains or bullet trains, whatever) has nothing to do with "soft" for Chinese, not to mention for westerner. D 308/306 is the fastest between Xian -Shanghai, and takes 11 hrs.

There is no train between these two cities that does the journey in 4-5 hours.

soft sleepers are not that bad but obviously not as soft as a soft bed in a 5-star hotel. But no shower in the morning.

The overnight D train's route is fairly decent, with only stops in the first few hours. Once past midnight, there are no stops for the next 5 hours / 700km until Nanjing at around 5am, arriving in Shanghai before 8am.

Are the sleeping berths on the D308 train arranged by 2 or by4? Can you lock up the compartment? We'ew 2 women travelling alone and would like to rest peacefully in a 2 berth private compartment.

Thank you!

Don't scare your self, it will be much more safe, peaceful than thought. It's four sharing one room with sliding door. So you need to buy up the 4 berths if wanting to have a private space.
