Last posting in 2006 about elong.com and Ctrip. Any updated news on how these work and if they are OK? Prices seem cheaper then Expedia but is it worth the hassle? Also found another web site that is OPODO - any information on this travel site?

Thanks

Yes you can find travel services from elong.com(better elong.net).But you also can find some Xi'an tour websites.

elong.net and ctrip.com allow online buying with international credit cards again now (but have a surcharge) so much easier than before when you had to fax credit card and other details.

For Beijing - Xi'an I'd use the overnight train, while for Xi'an - Shanghai I'd fly. If doing that, you can wait until you get to Beijing before booking the flight through your hotel.

I'd do overnight soft sleeper train for Beijing -- Xi'an, and either overnight train (16+ hours) or flight for Xi'an -- Shanghai.

Finding yourself a good travel agent would be invaluable. :)

I just booked beijing to xi'an, xi'an to shanghai on ctrip. Beijing - Xi'an was only 80 USD including fees, and Xi'an - Shanghai was 60 USD.

I was going to do the overnight train, but for a soft sleeper, it's ~500rmb (according to seat61).

Beijing -- Xi'an is 400/417 RMB by soft sleeper, so your flight is more expensive PLUS you have to pay for the night's accommodation.

Xi'an -- Shanghai is 499/511 RMB by soft sleeper, but you save on that night's accommodation.

I would like to know if there is a way I can get my Z 19 train tickets from Beijing to Xian prior to my arrival in Beijing. I understand the tickets are available 20 days in advance only in Beijing. Is it safe to trust the hostel get my ticket? Are they only reserving my softbed? I understand that there are websites where I can order them. Is this advisable? We have a fairly tight schedule and want to make sure we get the tickets and I understand that you can not wait long as Beijing to Xian is very popular. Is this correct? We will need to be in Xian May 13. What is the most trustworthy way.

Sorry, 10 days not 20 days in advance.

I should be able to help you out with the tickets if you let me know beforehand -- not last-minute, please.

How would I get the tickets from you? How would I pay for them? How much total would I pay as I am sure you would add a small fee for your service? I would like to compare the price of the 2 and 4 bed softbed (I read there is no hardbeds-6 bed areas) Thank you

Drop me an email at ellyse99@yahoo.com and put "TripAdvisor" and your own username (eg brie6089) in the subject line.

Do note that I'm NOT a tour agent trying to rip you off! A lot of regulars know who I am, and I also clearly state a brief description in my profile.
