Guilin to Shenzhen or Guangzhou

we are thinking about taking the train from Guilin to Shenzhen or Guangzhou with our daughter and then on to Hong Kong. Is the soft sleeper the best way to go and is it clean? (how much are the tickets?). Would we have to share the "room" or should we

purchase all the berths if we want privacy. I am assuming there

are communal restrooms and a restaurant car but please inform me if there isn't. Is it fairly easy to get from Shenzhen to Hong Kong by another bus or a train? Thanks so much for your help.

Guilin - Guangzhou and Guilin -Shenzhen is a cheap flight line in China. Better to check how cheap will be the air tickets before you look into softsleeper. Re travelling by train in generall, as Guilin - Guangzhou/Shenzhen is not a hot line, so it'll be easy to get softsleeper although act as early as possible is still a must.

Soft sleeper price for your reference: Guilin - Guangzhou from 383, Guilin- Shenzhen from 444.

You can see what still available real time on this site launched by China Raiyway Ministry: http://www.12306.cn/mormhweb/kyfw/ypcx/ . Just select date and paste departure and arrival city names( in Chinese Guilin=桂林, Guangzhou=广州, Shenzhen=深圳), put in security code then click 查询, you will see how many and which kinds of tickets are still available in seconds. I‘d like to give you some meaning of Chinese characters to help you understand well:

发时 depart time

到时 stop time

历时 duration

商务座 forget it (very few, only available in bullet trains )

特等座 forget it (very few, only available in bullet trains )

一等座 1st class seat (only available in bullet trains)

二等座 2nd class seat (only available in bullet trains)

高级软卧 luxury soft sleeper (a kind of private carbin with 2 beds and 1 toilet in it, it’s the best choice for night travel, but costs a lot even more than that of flight.)

软卧 normal soft sleeper

硬卧 hard sleeper

软座 soft seat

硬座 hard seat

无座 no seat, sit on your legs.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write out such concise instructions. It looks very complicated and I think the plane looks easier. Do you know if the bus is easy to access from Shenzhen to Hong Kong and how much it costs? Is it better to fly into Shenzhen or Guangzhou?

Thank you again.

From Shenzhen, the best route to get into HK would be to take the MTR subway system, which can easily take you to any part of Hong Kong within the hour. Cost is relatively cheap and will only be a maximum of HK$50/person.

All you'll need to do is go to LuoHu Port(named "Lo Wu" in Hong Kong) , go through China customs, walk across the bridge to Hong Kong customs, and once cleared, the MTR should be to your right.

You'll be using the MTR quite frequently throughout your visit in HK so I'd suggest becoming familiar with their system now and plan accordingly.

For more information on the MTR, you can visit their website here:

We flew direct from Guilin to Shenzhen. It's a very short 1 hour ride. Once at the airport there will be different bus companies offering to sell you a ride to Hong Kong. You tell them which part of Hong Kong you want to go to. You're driven to the border and unload your luggage from the bus, and walk through the Chinese and Hong Kong customs sections. The only problem doing it this way is the amount of people. It took us 45 minutes to clear both sides and get back on the bus. The main problem was clearing Chinese customs, the Hong Kong side was very quick.

from shenzhen to hong kong its very easy. if you are in shenzhen go by subway to Lou Wu. Then cross by walk over a bridge the border. In Hong Kong you take the MRT subway. If you want go to Hong Kong Airport you can take a Double Decker Bus.

The borders closes at 24.00.

If you want go back to china again you need new visa or multiple visa.

The sleeper train from Guilin to Shenzhen is the best mode of transport. The hard sleepers are not as their description would have you believe. They are soft and comfortable. The normal cabin (no door) has 6 berths. These are about 150 yuan per person.

The more expensive beds are around 350 each I think, and there are 4 berths per cabin - I have no idea if there is a door on these cabins.

The train stops in Lo Wu. You simply follow the signs to the Hong Kong border from there. It will take you about 15minutes to get to customs, really not a problem at all.

Lo Wu is a train crossing border which means you board the MTR (East Rail Line) on the other side straight through into Hong Kong proper. The East Rail Line ends in Hung Hom, but change at Kowloon Tong if you want any of the other lines.

If you're thinking the Guangzhou - Hong Kong through train is a better option, its not. This sells out early, and apart from that, the Guilin train may come into a different station. The through train leaves from Guangzhou East station.

Its a lot easier to go through to Shenzhen Lo Wu.

If you book the plane tickets in advance, they will be quite cheap. It is the fastes way.

From Shenzhen airport to Hong Kong, you can take the subway (MTR), but it is a very long way with many stops. There is no bus directly after the Luohu border. You will need to take the MTR again on the HK side and change one or two times. Still convenient and easy to find the way, just needs time.

Depending on where you want to go, I recommend taking a bus, a shared mini van or the ferry. It will take you about an hour to 1,5 hours from Shenzhen airport to Hong Kong.

It does not make sense to fly into Guangzhou to go to Hong Kong if you do not plan to visit Guangzhou. From Guangzhou airport you would have to take a bus to Hong Kong (2.5-4 hours) or got to Guangzhou East railway station to take the express train (a little over one hour).
