Train from Hong Kong to Guilin

Greetings all,

Hoping for some advice regarding train travel from Hong Kong to Guilin. I understand we must first get a train from Hong Kong to Guangzhou, then another connecting train from Guangzhou on to Guilin (probably a sleeper).

Has anyone done this and if so any tips with regard to

- reliability of train network in China i.e. connections

- which class of travel is appropriate

- best way to book tickets

- what to take with us

- meals on trains

- is Guangzhougood for a few hours visit and if so what is recommended

- etc etc etc

We are 5 in number - 2 adults and 3 children aged 9, 12, 13. Our time of travel shall be late September 2011.

Thanks Michael

1. Re: Train from Hong Kong to Guilin

If you take a train, you can go via Guangzhou or Shenzhen. The other option is taking a bus from Shenzhen to Yangshuo (not Guilin).

Train service is very reliable in China, schedule, fare and class of travel can be found at

chinatravelguide.com/ctgwiki/…

Train tickets are sold 10 days in advance, you can buy it through CTS Hong Kong.

You can bring your own food, hot water are provided free of charge, dining car also available, serves only very simple Chinese food.
