Birthday boy

Eight of us in St Petersburg for my husbands birthday in early November. Trying to get ideas for something other than dinner at restaurant. Maybe a lunch in the country side or on the river? Anyone got any ideas. We are up for most things and would prefer to eat Georgian food not tourist food.

Of course, you are aware this time of year, while not winter per se will likely be fairly cold, maybe damp, windy, etc...not sure this would lend itself to a bucolic meal setting?

OOPS...I see you are from Scotland, so, heck, weather may in fact not be a big deal?

If the last several years is any indication, November will be ice free so river and canal boats are still available. There are river boats with dining. One is particular good for food is call New Island Restaurant. You could also charter a smaller boat and create a picnic and festivities. Price should be about $60/hour for a boat the appropriate size for your party.

What sort of food are you referring to when saying "tourist food"? I know of only a few places that cater to visitors. It would not make a lot of business sense for a restaurant owner to focus attention on visitors specifically when the real business is from locals for 12 months of the year plus some tourists for 4 months of the year. There are many cuisines available, in fact a very good Scottish restaurant in the center called Aberdeen. There are fewer Russian cuisine restaurants because locals can get that at home so when going out they are more interested in food they would not make for themselves. Georgian has been more popular in the past then now but there are still good choices available at different price points.
