 Vegetarian options ?

Hi,

We are looking forward to 10 days in SP in May 2010. We are vegetarian (eat some dairy) and wonder if anyone had suggestions for good, economical places to eat , especially near the Hermitage?

We love good Indian food and like to be adventurous, just no meat. Also, is it hard to get a good ( strong) cup of coffee in SP?

Thanks

No problems with coffee, there are plenty of local cafes, like Coffehouse, for example, similiar to Starbox. In the city centre you will be impressed by the number of cafes.

As for vegeterian option, I can't remember any cafe or restaurant, specialized in vegeterian food, but of course in every restaurant you are free to offer some vegeterian food without any problems

Coffee - lots of good places along Nevsky (the main street) and all around the city center. Coffee is usually rather strong. I personally love the coffee shop on the second floor of Zinger House (or Book House – major book store in St.Pete) – you will find this impressive building easily in the very center of the city. Perfect coffee, good pastries and snacks and the best view on Nevsky prospect and Kazansky church. Definitely worth a stop.

I also like the chain called Shokoladnitsa (chocolate girl). I believe they served the best hot chocolate in the city. And good coffee as well.

Vegetarian food. Almostevery restaurant or café has a vegetarian option. For example many people like to have quick lunch in Teremok – Russian fast food café serving blinies with different fillings. So you can have it with mushrooms, cheese, fish and so on.

Idiot on Moika is a very good place – very friendly.

I like Teplo restaurant -yes, it is not vegetarian but fish and vegetables are offered.

There are two Indian restaurant 2 min awat from the Hermitage museum – Tandoor and Tandoori nights.

Try also the café called “Troitsky most’ (Trinity Bridge). It’s a chain so choose the one on your way:

Kronversky prospect, 35

Or Malaya Posadskaya 9/2,

Or Vasilyevsky Ostrov, 6th Line 15

or Vasilyevsky Ostrov, 6th Line 27

Or Bolshoy prospect, 55

Or Grand Cafe "Troitsky Most"

Zagorodny prospect, 38

Have a pleasant trip!

I've been to "Idiot" restaurant and I liked it very much. All dishes were very tasty . The great thing is menu in English :)

After visiting the Hermitage museum I took lunch at Troitsky most (on Moika river embankment) and it was difficult to me to make an order because they don't have menu in English... and if you can't read russian (i can not :))) you only have to choose between some salads and cakes as they are on display near cash desk.

I like Oliva restaurant (31 Bolshsaya Morskaya street) that is not purely vegetarian but they have a number of vegetarian dishes and you can choose them easily in the menu because they give a list of ingredients for every dish (menu in English).

Thank you so much! I do not have any Russian language either ( although I am studying as much as possible) so knowing where there are a few English language menus is very helpful!

Hi Nancy

I am not much of a cook so I've gone out to dinner probably 300 nights a year and find that almost every cafe and restaurant has meatless dishes. Of those mentioned, the Idiot is a favorite of mine. I am an omnivore and eat almost anything and that vegetarian restaurant have creative dishes, all without meat, that would satisfy the most avid carnivore. They have a mushroom ravioli dish that I particularly like. Each seating area is like a cozy dining room in a private home, there is no restaurant type furniture.

Tandoori Nights is another favorite for Indian good. The owner/executive chef owns a popular upscale Indian restaurant in London named The Three Monkeys.

For a filling salad bar, try one of the several Yalki Palki restaurants, all you can eat for a fixed price with many choices for traditional Russian salads plus all the ingredients to make a western style lettuce and vegetable salad. I go there when I am really hungry, I certainly manage to get my money's worth.

Most cafes, pubs and restaurants in the city center have English menus but often you need to ask for one. There is a popular trend towards English or Irish pubs, there are over a hundred now, and you can usually find good food as well as friendly atmospheres with English speaking locals.

Even the familiar US based fast food outlets all have some vegetarian menu items with names such as Subway, Carl's Jr, Pizza Hut etc.

You will NOT starve in St Petersburg, probably every block will have a suitable establishment.

Have a great visit...
