i am travelling to moscow & st p mid february. i am a single female traveller. have been reading most of the russian forum - i am slightly concerned about several things:
- how safe or unsafe is it? i went to STA travel yesterday to put my mind at ease. unfortunately i had the misfortune of being 'advised' by the most discouraging travel agent, who proceeded to tell me amongst other things that 'i will be robbed on the train from poland to russian', 'if i have to ask for directions, ask young ppl because older russian ppl will spit at me'. that i must go on a tour because 'i cant read russian and will get lost' and ' i will be cheated at every opportunity'.. the list of negatives goes on & on....
i left with the impression that moscow/st p is going to be extremely hard going, people are unfriendly, and no place for an independent traveller.
i have been monitoring the weather in russia for the past couple of weeks - the current weather is proving not to be a great source of encouragement either.
does anyone have some encouraging/cautionary words? is it wise to try and take on russia under these extreme weather conditions? i do not plan to do very much - some museums and basically taking it easy. my greatest objective is to take the train ride from moscow to st p.
hope to hear from someone asap
