A few questions - first trip to Moscow - Feb 2010

Hello everyone,

I'm planning a trip to Moscow next February to celebrate my wife's birthday - the big 4-0.

Hotel and flights are booked, can't do the visa yet as the date is too distant.

1) Just by chance we are going over Valentine's weekend. Are Muscovites/Russians in general big on Valentine's day and therefore are all restaurants likely to be booked up well in advance? Should I attempt to book now?

2) Restaurant 1 Red Square. The website says the restaurant is closed yet I saw a review of it posted just last week. Can anyone clarify the situation for me?

3) Footwear. I'm well aware that outside it will be very cold and inside quite warm but I'm struggling to decide on footwear. At home I'm a kind of Doc Martens/Blundstones sort of chap, these being fine for cold, wet and slush but as we are staying in a swanky hotel that seems pretty inappropriate. However, smart leather shoes seem like a foolish choice for walking about in the street in February. Or are the streets dry and clear at that time of year? I envisage some British-style sea of slush.

> Are Muscovites/Russians in general big on Valentine's day

Yes, it's got quite big after the fall of the iron curtain

> therefore are all restaurants likely to be booked up well in advance?

No, I don't think so, not THAT big :)

> Should I attempt to book now?

Well, if you know exactly what restaurant you are going to, why not, but I'm not sure they take reservations that far in advance

> Restaurant 1 Red Square

Sorry, have no idea

> At home I'm a kind of Doc Martens/Blundstones sort of chap, these being fine for cold, wet and slush but as we are staying in a swanky hotel that seems pretty inappropriate

I wouldn't make a big fuss about being "inappropriate", just wear what you're comfortable in.

> However, smart leather shoes seem like a foolish choice for walking about in the street in February

Yep, you're likely to regret it :) Actually in Moscow you can buy smart-looking leather shoes/boots with fur lining, but does it make sense for one trip?

> Or are the streets dry and clear at that time of year?

I wouldn't count on it. The only chance of them being dry and clear is when it's colder than -10 outside, not very appropriate weather for smart leather shoes :)

> I envisage some British-style sea of slush.

Trust me, it's much much worse! :)

That was super-rapido. Thanks. I'll continue to agonise on the shoe thing. I understand that in museums and so forth, visitors have to put on some sort of 'shoe condom', for want of a better term, to keep the floors in good condition.

If you ask my opinion, you really shouldn't

Not in all museums, just in some of them, where original floors are actually a part of the exposition. They have 'shoe condoms' for all sizes, so no problem here

Bring 2 pairs of shoes- something warm and waterproof for the mess outside, and nice dress shoes for the outside.

Destination Expert   What's this?
for Moscow, Rostov-on-Don

Dress for very cold weather. Heavy coat with wind breaking capability. Heavy gloves, lined hat that covers ears. And if you will be out side walking around very much, I would suggest long johns. Moscow can get real nasty in feb. I recommend getting a pair of (Georgia boots) (company name). More comfortable to walk in than shoes. Boots in feb in Moscow is a very wise idea. AIM.

Well, I usually book a week in advance for valentines day. However, it's very unlikely that all restraunts will be fully booked. but if you have yior mind set on a particular restraunt, make a reservation just to be on the safe side.

As for shoes, I spent many winters wearing Doc Martens - perfect for the weather. Unfortunatly, I can't wear them to work any more :) But I don't think that kind of footwear will look out of place in any hotel - and anyway, you should wear whatever you feel comfortable in

I think the Valentine's day is very popular in Moscow now, I would suggest to book in advance provided you are sure of the place.

It really depends on what restaurant you’re interested in. If you are looking for a posh place or a small homey like restaurant, it is better to make a reservation in advance. However if you just want to have a dinner in a nice place, I don’t see a problem there at all. Just maybe you’ll have to wait for 10-15 minutes in a bar – no more than that (from my experience).

As for the weather – it looks like it is a bit exaggerated as for wearing all that heavy clothes. It is indeed cold, and we had few years when it was – 30 in February (more of an abnormal situation nowadays which is actually a pity in my opinion, I miss cold winters). But usually it is quite nasty with temperatures varying from –10 to +1 in February (depending on the fact whether we are lucky to have a normal snow winter or a mild nasty autumn weather). I agree with everything said about shoes, you won’t need a fancy style except if you’re going to a club of any fancy place

Thanks everyone for your advice. I set this thread to 'watched' but didn't receive any email saying that anyone had posted to it so my apologies if my lack of response made me appear ungrateful.
