Lima > Puno... bad idea???

Hello,

My wife and I were thinking we would go to Cusco first (arrive Sunday, 9/9) for a few days, acclimatize a bit, enjoy the city and Machu Pichu, and then go on to Puno by train from there on Wed (9/12). But, it seems the trip back from Puno to Lima for our return flight home on Sunday (9/16) will be a bit complicated, due to the limited days for train and plane travel.

I am thinking it would work better if we just flew straight from Lima to Puno on Sunday (9/9), spend a couple days there, and then take the train from Puno to Cusco, from where it will be easier to catch a flight back to Lima.

Do you think the sudden increase in altitude would be too hard on the body, going straight from Lima to Puno? Has anyone done it before? If I used medication does anyone think it would still be a problem?

Thank you very much

San Diego...

Since Cusco is over 11,000 feet and Puno over 12,000 you'll be going straight to altitude no matter what (unless you were heading to the Sacred Valley first and not staying in Cusco). Altitude affects different people different ways, but go slow and drink a lot of fluids. Since they're both at alititude you should go whichever way works best for your travel needs.

I do not understand why it would be complicated to rtn from Puno (Juliaca airport) to Lima to catch yr USA flight.

Check with Lan.com for available flights.

I know they have more than one flight per day.
