And you are totally right about that level of expectation.. The difference here is that the whole concept of "going that extra mile" isn't really part of the culture...they are already trying their best to serve a client (us!) who have an expectation of enhanced service already, before we even arrive.
You see it all the time ,especially in regard to some of the reviews you see here on RDC, And to be frank, before our first trip, I was a little suspicious of what we would encounter after reading some of the hundreds of reviews.
After our trip last year I came to realize that some people will never be pleased and will always find something to complain about...they just didn't get the anticipated "value" out of their travel dollar that they expected. They aren't getting "horrible" service, they just aren't getting the service they expected.
I hope you enjoy your trip and that you actually talk to the people who are serving you.You will see that they really want you to enjoy your stay and to come back often. They especially seem to really like Canadians. I can't explain why that might be.
Tip early and tip often. The old trick of giving a housekeeper half of a $20 bill and promising the other half on receipt of good service would not be well-received here...they just don't have that "tip culture" ingrained into them. The bartenders WILL remember you by your drink and I can tell you that after my second day there I knew I could go to one of my "regular" bar guys and not have to wait very long in a crowd. They are really trying very hard to make our vacation enjoyable. I'm curious if I will be remembered by them when I return, but I don't expect so.
For our trip this year I am teaching our 13 year old how to pass a tip off in a handshake...he's getting pretty good at it and I hope to see him put it to good use.
In a nutshell...disregard the reviews you have read about service here...if you are a nice person, and treat people well, you WILL have a great time. I hope we run into each other, as our weeks overlap. I'd love to see how it goes for you.
