Surfing and a nice hotel

We would like to stay directly on the beach near a good surf break (beginner to intermediate) in this area or another area of Panama. We want to also be near some places to eat and explore. Which lodging options would be best for this? We are staying for 8-9 nights and would like to keep it to $1400 lodging for the total time if possible.

You are looking at the city of Pedasi. It has the best surfing in Panama. It is in the Los Santos province. There is a young American there who sells real estate part of the day and then spends the rest of his day surfing. The area is growing and there is a lot of new construction going on there. I would recommend that area if you want to surf.

There are a lot of nice Hotels in Bocas , one of them as the owner is a surfer as well is Tierra Verde on Carenero. But there are as well other Hotels in Bocas and several very good people that offer surf lessons.

The Firefly is a new place on Bastimentos with a break right in front, the owners are a young surfer couple from california. There are also intermediate breaks within walking distance. The beginner breaks between basti & Carenero are a 2 min boat ride away. The food there is also some of the best in Bocas. Roots, Mantis & Bushman's Kitchen are all a short walk away. Basti has the best caribbean vibe of the islands.

For an inexpensive, fun option for places to stay, the Hostel Bastimentos is perfect. They have wi-fi, free use of callucos (small dugout canoes), and a stellar view of the bay. The owner will give you tons of local information and can arrange boats to remote beaches and surf spots anywhere (beginners to experts). He'll also set up you up with a guide for other adventures. There's good diving with a company called Scuba 6 located "in the belly of the bay" a short walk from the hostel. For really good, fresh food, and the best coffee, Bushman's Kitchen was my go-to favorite, hands down.
