Essaouira or Sidi Kaouki?

We're travelling to Morocco at end July/early August with 3 kids (6 to 11). We are trekking in the Atlas in the second week and would like to go to Essaouira first. We would like to get a bit of beach / swimming / local culture and general relaxing - not at all interested in the surfing community or night life (other than for eating out in souks etc.). Would we be better off staying in Sidi Kaouki or Essaouira? Someone recommended Riad Tifaouine near Sidi Kaouki - anyone been there recently and recommend? If not, any recommendation for essaouira or nearby? Interested in something simple - Thanks a lot!

Normally people would stay in Essaouira for 3 days (minimum) as this has all the authenticity of any Moroccan town you are likely to find.

Sidi Kaouki is the sort of place one would visit for half a day FROM Ess by local bus for about 6Dh (guessing here) and is only abot 20-25 minutes ride.

Ess has a good beach and good inexpensive traditional restaurants although there are facilities for every budget.

There is far more to see in Ess and it is a very relaxing place although (fortunately) no night clubs or bars as in moe touristy attractions as Agadir or Marrakech.

All the best

I know someone who swears by Sidi Kaouki but we were there 4 days ago for an update and not somewhere Id choose to stay....Essaouira for sure and just have a side trip to SK. (we couldn't even have a sit down for coffee...it was for tourists who wanted to eat came first we were told!)

Am I reading right?....no night clubs or bars in Essaouira? there is a few of them for sure...from for drunks only through to discrete have a beer while watching the footie to classier nightclubs. A few of the more upmarket hotels have Gnaoua and Berber music - a new restaurant we were invited to come and visit by friends overlooking the Skala with stunning views had a very nice seafood menu and also Gnaoua and Berber music...and a good Moroccan winelist.

But for families on holidays theres lots to keep you busy and as relaxed as youd like to be at Essaouira - lovely long beach - visit the port and watch the fisherman bringing in their boats and fixing their nets - see the sunset from along the seaside fortress walls, camels and horses along the beach, paragliding, people watching and enjoying slow coffees and delicious orange juice amongst the many cafes etc...watch the seagulls, meander around the narrow alleyways and look at the old doors and windows....fascinating place

theres a good museum for the area in the medina as well

Great! Thanks a lot for the recommendations. I think we'll stay in Ess and do a day trip to Sidi Kaouki if we get bored in Ess. Someone also suggested Oualidia which is 2 hours North and nicer to swim (less wind) so may do that. Thanks again.

Yes its lovely up there at Oualidia! - we did a drive up to Safi for the day the other day - would love to have gone to El Jadida to have some proper time around the fortress and actually see the cistern for the first time as its been shut each other time! but didnt want to do too much as we have already been quite busy but the drive even just to Safi was lovely and enjoyed seeing more of the sites inside the fortress and medina and seafood lunch. Oualidia is lovely - and have done the obligatory oyster indulging there too!

You will be pleased to stay in Essaouira and have a few days and evenings there in addition to whatever day trips you do! All the best!
