Are gay couples accepted in the Maldives?

Hi there everyone!

Myself and my partner are thinking of traveling to the Hilton Maldives to celebrate our civil-union next year. The hotel looks amazing and we can’t wait to snorkel in the reef! We’ve been to a few Hilton hotels before and were especially impressed by the new one in Kuala Lumpur which is fantastic value for money!

Whilst we’re not a couple who demonstrate obvious public displays of affection, we’re worried that we might be uncomfortable staying in such a strict Muslim country as the Maldives, or that the Hotel would not be happy with a “gay couple” staying. Does any one know whether there may any problems for same-gender couples in the Maldives, and the Hilton Maldives in particular?

Thanks a lot!

Hi Droso,

This question has been asked on these forums before. We have been to the Maldives three times now, and have seen at least one same gender couple on each holiday. We certainly didnt see any signs of unacceptance at all.

The Maldives are a very laid back experience for tourists, and I personally dont think you will have any problems. Even though I havent ben to the Hilton, I'm sure the same can be said for there too. I'm sure posters that have been will reassure you on that.

Go for it!

Regards, Lisa.

i agree with lisa . the maldivians are a very tolerant people and i would see no problem at all. personally, i think they much prefer a friendly, quiet , polite couple of any gender association over some of the drunks and louts they unfortunately have to put up with.

while "too much" public affection is not necessarily a sign of respect for a muslim host country from any couple (especially when visiting native islands) , there certainly is no need to attempt to hide your relationship or refrain from holding hands or whatever any loving couple does.

i think you will really enjoy the maldives . you can look forward to a wonderful time . no need to worry .

Hi Droso

We stayed on Fihahoia in feb this year and there were two same gender couples there at the time, they walked around the island holding hands the same as everyone else, no one bothered, i think its more about who you are not what you are that counts, go and have a great time

in an ideal world maybe this statement is true but in a lot of countries and environments it simply isnt so. Some peoples cultures are tolerable of peoples freedom of choice but others arnt. I think in the Maldives however you will be fine.

HI Droso

I am in a gay relationship and have been to the Maldives twice, which should speak for itself.

Let me reassure you that you are treated no different to anyone else. The staff are welcoming, freindly and attentive and we got on extremely well with all of them, along with many of the other guests.

At no time were we made to feel uncomfortable.

Please go and have the holiday of a lifetime.

My partner and I visited Kuredu island last year. All the staff were very pleasant towards us. Our waitress did ask if we were brothers (we just smiled and said "no"). We were however both propositioned by the boy from the gift shop, which was a bit surprising. We both declined, I hasten to add. We plan to visit the Maldives again but to a different island this time, which should speak for its self really.
