I am planning to climb Mount Kinabalu in October. I have looked at booking a tour, but they all seem over priced and I would have to pay 50% surcharges as I'm on my own. Has anybody here done the climb on their own? How easy is it to meet up with other people? Are you guarenteed to get a pass and accomodation once you're there. Any other info would be gratefully recieved! Report as inappropriate |

Hi Vicki see my previous postings for info on how cheap and easy this is to do. Report as inappropriate

Further to my previous itinerary you can cut costs even more by joining a group at the park and contributing for the guide, which is quite commen, and catching a bus instead of a taxi back to KK from the park gates for about 1GBP. Report as inappropriate

Don't climb on your own, especially IF you are a female. It may not be safe. I know my country well enough to give you this advice. Report as inappropriate

Sabah Parks are very strict and will not let anyone climb the mountain, (knowingly), without being accompanied in some manner by an official guide. Report as inappropriate

Hello Vivki, If you dont want to do a tour I would try and arrive as early as possible to climb. 6:30 A.M. or so. You can then register at the park HQ and find a guide. I would join a tour though, especially for your first time up. You can save some money in the long run and have a better experience. They know what pace to keep up and you will arrive at the summit at sun rise for one of the most beautiful experiences of your life. A tour is especially important if you arent used to high altitudes and dont understand the seriousness of altitude sickness and over exertion. There is almost a 10,000 foot difference between the park entrance and the summit. Its not a difficult climb but you should be in decent shape. Report as inappropriate

I cannot help but disagree slightly with the previous post. If you join a group you will share a guide and feel the need to pace yourself to suit the group. However, if you have your own guide, (as some contributors on this forum have done), you can not only pick your own perfect pace but you have a one on one with your guide who will obviously have a lot more time specifically for you. You will therefore be better informed and you may even, like us, get to see addittional things off of the main path on the way up, (such as huge picture plants that flourish away from the main drag). The guides are all registered and know the trail really well, they are also a very good judge of peoples capabilities so again, another good reason for a one on one/two guide. My partner struggled heavily on the final 2km down and our guide was able to concerntrate fully on assisting her all the way to the bottom. He also organised private transportation back to KK for us at a reasonable rate, we did not have to think about a thing which was a good job really as we were both so tired! Hi Purrfecttune, Can you please tell me whether you arranged your tour guide and accommodation for your summit climb before or after you arrived in KK? Did you arrange most of it via the internet (ie emails) or some other way? Thanks! Report as inappropriate
