Noordin Mews v Muntri Mews

Hi there !

I will be spending 4 nights in Penang in May 2013 and im torn between staying at Noordin Mews and Muntri Mews. Would anyone be able to give a recommendation based on the location, accessibility, food / heritage attractions ?

We will be traveling in quite a big group - 7 young adults and 2 elderly.

Appreciate your help :)

Both are operated by the same hotelier, but Noordin Mews was recently opened, so you'll get spanking new beddings.

Both are well located. Muntri Mews being a shorter walk to the heritage attractions. Noordin Mews is a hop away(2-3 mins stroll) from Komtar, so if you are planning to take the public Rapid buses, then Muntri Mews is ideal. The street where Noordin Mews is located is busy in the daytime, but quiet at night.

Take a look at Rapid website.

The free hopOn Rapid bus(CAT) has a stop near Muntri Street/Penang Road(#7) and circuit also covers Komtar (#9), so for either hotels, you dont really have to walk under the hot sun to most of the heritage attractions.

Hawker food wise, popular haunts of Singaporeans are New Lane, MacAlister Road char koay teow which is about 10 mins walk from Noordin Mews.

Noordin Mews has a small swimming pool in the courtyard whereas Muntri Mews does not.

Noordin Mews does not have a full fledged restaurant but does offer breakfast, Muntri Mews has a cafe.

The street where Noordin Mews is more industrial but very close and convenient to KOMTAR whereas Muntri Mews is right in the heritage part of Georgetown.

My apologies, should read as " Noordin Mews is a hop away(2-3 mins stroll) from Komtar, so if you are planning to take the public Rapid buses, then Noordin Mews is ideal"

Refer to this map. Noordin Mews is in mid Lebuh Noordin(Noordin street), so 1st Avenue mall is the landmark.

I´m staying in Muntri now, after 5 nights on Noordin. I can recommend both, but we liked the staff better at Noordin (not that there´s anything wrong with the ones at Muntri, it´s just that they are awesome at Noordin), and Noordin has a pool. The location is better at Muntri if you want to explore the food, and the food at Muntri Kafe is just fantastic. It´s a cointoss basicly.

Something to consider with 7 young adults is how much of a deciding factor a pool would be. When we travel we don't need a pool as we generally don't spend enough time at our hotel to relax in a pool. On the flip side we have both family and friends for whom having a pool can be the make or break for a hotel... For us we would choose based on which hotel has the best deal price wise, however our friends would be willing to pay a bit more for a pool...

Other than that, there's really not a lot to separate the two hotels (well, the pool and that Muntri Mews has a cafe, though in Penang there is no shortage of places to get a meal at all times of the day and night).

Both are great location wise as they are within easy walk of public transport options (Noordin Mews being close to Komtar, and Muntri Mews nearby Lubuh Chulia and Jalan Penang - both of which a large number of the Rapid Penang buses pass through.

Both are an easy walk to the heritage zone - Muntri Mews is within the heritage zone, and for Noordin Mews you can simply walk down Lebuh Noordin then up Lebuh Pantai which takes you into the heritage zone.

Muntri Mews is closer to what nightlife there is in Penang (ie. the bars and clubs on Upper Penang Road, and the little bars along Lebuh Chulia) which may be a drawcard for some in the group (depending on how old your young adults are of course).

Noordin Mews is closer to shopping including Komtar, 1st Avenue, Prangin Mall, GAMA, Times Square...

Food options are plentiful from both. Noordin Mews is close to the Lorong Baru (New Lane) Hawkers, while Muntri Mews is very close to the Red Garden Hawkers. There are lots of cafes and restaurants concentrated around both areas as Komtar is the main shopping zone within George Town, and Muntri Mews is close to the backpacker enclaves of Lebuh Chulia and Lorong Cinta.

Both have recently won 2013 TripAdvisor awards for excellence based on reviews... Both are relatively new... Both are in restored heritage buildings...

So unless a pool is important to any of your travellers, you could (as mentioned above) toss a coin...

We realise we probably haven't helped much here, perhaps poll your travel group to find out what each person really wants or considers a must have in accommodation? That may help...

Or again, you could always toss a coin ;-)
