Personally I would think 1 week to be far far too long in Penang, as for the hotel, if you are looking to be near the centre, save money and have a great bed and shower but a small room, then you just can't beat Tune Hotels. If you book in advance you can get a room for 35RM, or much less in sales periods.

There are some nice colonial buildings in Georgetown but the typical old style houses' novelty soon wears off. Personally Thailand is 100 times more exotic, charismatic, cheaper, interesting in every way.
