Don't think it is worth it; too many things to see, do and eat in a day trip. Might as well stay over for a night or two! After all, Firefly is cheap.

Hi, let's say you take the first firefly to PNG from LGK, which is 1015hrs,and arrives into PNG at 1050hrs,and say you take the last flight back to LGK from PNG,which is 1935hrs.

So, you have 8hrs 45mins in Penang, though of that duration, best to allow 2.5hours for airport transfer(to Penang airport, and also check-in procedures).

So you are left with 6hrs 15mins.

In that timeframe, you have the architecture heritage trail (covering Chinese clan houses,e.g. Blue Mansion, Khoo Kongsi, buildings in Beach St, shophouses in Lebuh Chulia/Leith), conducted by Penang Heritage Trust, around Georgetown. So, check with PHT,if they could greet and meet you at the airport, so that you can start your tour immediately.

Then going to Air Hitam for Kek Lok Si temple and also Penang Hill, after high tea in E&O hotel.

I guess that is about it,as we do have to allow for some buffer time;as such,as earlier thread had advised, you will miss out on the hawkers scene at Gurney Drive(which is very popular).

In fact, best way is upon arrival in PNG airport, is to charter a taxi and driver.

Its just not worth the hassle of doing a day trip, you'd need one night in Penang at least !

Rather than fly, why not try the Langkawi Coral (or similar) ferry, stay overnight in Georgetown, and do all the thing that mKiaratravel suggests.

Review of fireflys delays and cancellation is not the best eiter.

I am inclined to agree with mitch. The other alternative is to take the boat from Langkawi to Perlis or Kuala Kedah. These boats almost run every hour. The last one back to Langkawi is around 7.00pm

From Perlis or Kedah you can negotiate with a taxi driver to tour Penang and have you back for the last boat to Langkawi.

More fun than flying !

I am starting to get a little confused. My husband and I are doing a 4 week trip at xmas and planned to spend 5 days in either Penang or Langkawi. The kids are 10, 12 and 14. We were told that Penang would be better but it sounds as though Langkawi is more suited. We were also planning on going to Kota Kinabalu/Sandakan, Bangkok and Phuket flying Air Asia all the way.Has anyone got any opinions, comments or advice on this?

Hi

Don't know if Deano2010 and LisaSydney are connected. Deano2010's orginal question was about a daytrip from LGK to PEN.

As for staying 5 days, it will depend what your children like to do LisaSydney. You know what they enjoy and hate.

They may find LGK a bit quiet, and therefore Penang would be more their scene, and the advice you have been given would be correct. The list of things to do (which is fab I must say) was for a day in Georgetown, so the children may find Batu Ferringhi more to their liking, plenty to do and keep them amused. Finding the balance in a family holiday is always difficult, but keeping 3 under 14's happy is difficult mix of fun and the stuff adults like doing sightseeing! Penang and inparticular Batu Ferringhi, I think is, a better family mix for all.

Of course you could check out Pentai Cenang in LGK, as a bit to do there for your kids.

Also do check out Malaysian Airline internal flight costs, as they are not really much different from Air Asia, plus you get an extra 5kg per passenger baggage allowance.

Lisa,

There is a lot more to do and see on Penang. Langkawi holidays are very beach orientated, and the town there (Kuah) is very small with not much to do but shopping or visit a local restuarant. They do have the better beaches on Langkawi though, and some very good nature tours and boat trips.

Batu is quite busy compared to any of the Langkawi beaches, but its well located for easy access to Georgetown and all the other attractions of Palau Pinang.

Your itinerary sounds great !
