Hi

Just curious as to how much meals are at the Andaman hotel Langkawi for 8 nights in 2 weeks time?

Im staying there with my new wife (on our honeymoon) and although we did some research as to costs of eating and drinking at both the Andaman and the Datai (I believe we can cross sign on both resorts)I obviously want to be certain ive got things covered so I can relax and enjoy myself...

I dont think im under any illusions about the quality of the hotel ,after all it is our honeymoon and we are willing to splurge... I also realize that it will depend heavily on what we eat but a general guide is all im after? Ive heard that the costs are similar to UK prices or a little less? But I dont seem to be able to confirm that from the Andaman website - no menu? Also with us staying out of the way at the top of the island, the options for travelling out of the resort to eat are limited but any suggestions for a night "out" are welcome...If anyone has any guide for me or suggestions as to whats good or whats not... then it would really be helpful to hear from you

We are also staying in KL for 3 nights and I believe that the food at the night markets is fabulous!? Again any guide to wheres good to eat either cheap or splurge but its the Andaman that im most curious about?

many thanks

Dear JT,

the Andaman of course is priced on the upper end of the market but still I would say compared to other 5 star resorts in the world affordable. L

I have been to the Gulai House just recently, one of the most expensive places on the island, but I enjoyed that evening a lot! I have had a great meal, excellent service and I loved the setup in the rain forest. I have spent about 200 RM / person.

At the lobby bar you pay 23 to 24 RM glass of wine, 26 RM for a cocktail. Main course at the main restaurant goes from 72 up to 105 RM. A bottle of wine starts at 110 RM

All prices plus 10 % service charge.

All these numbers I got a minute ago directly from the hotel as I have done a phone call to the Andaman.

I personally love the restaurants of Casa del Mar and Bon Ton very much. They are about 30 min. by taxi away from the Andaman.

Tip: Try to make contact to a local taxi driver and call him when you need him; you save quite some money as the taxis from Andaman are VERY expensive!

In Pantai Cenang and Tengah we have a good number of all sorts of good and very good restaurants for all budgets.

You will be spoilt.

Have a marvelous time.

Hi JT,

Eva is right. The Andaman is pretty secluded so it might get boring if you only ate in the hotel alone for 9 days. A meal at the Gulai House usually costs about RM 400 for two, including service charge, a bottle of wine, a few malay dishes and local fare, depending on what you order. Never went to the lobby bar before, I had always drinks at the pool bar and the prices for fruit juices are RM 13 - 15 per glass by the pool. I paid RM 48+ for buffet breakfast at the Restaurant, but I was not pleased with the quality of food and the choices, maybe I went during low season, and there wasn't much to eat. I've switched to Room Service in the mornings, its a much better choice and you get a breakfast set with eggs, sausages, juice, coffee, breads and jam for less than RM 40 per person.

Of course the prices are rather expensive for local standards, but I think its really cheaper by RM 100 - RM400 per meal at the Andaman compared to a similar restaurant/hotel in Kuala Lumpur (Hilton, Carcosa Negara). A few good tips to save on the meals and to enjoy them as well:

1) Get a cab driver or rent a car. They'll pick you up and bring you to nice restaurants around the island, the nightmarkets (lots and lots to eat from burgers to grilled chicken (malaysian durian, mangosteen and rambutan season just started this week), but check for cleanliness and if you ask your cab driver to guide you around. I like the Kuah and Tanjung Rhu night markets the most.

2) Alcohol is cheap at all supermarkets and shops in town. There is a good one in Kuah town where I normally get mine from - the Zone supermarket at the corner shoplot. You'll get a bottle of Jack Daniels for RM 50, martinis for RM 30 below and a decent large bottle of Champagne (Bollinger or similar) for RM 200. Buy some back to enjoy in your room. Ice is complimentary from the hotel. Do tell the hotel that its your honeymoon and they decorate your room for you with rose petals!

Besides that - sorry, I don't know where else to spulrge in Langkawi because I've always liked Langkawi because of its peacefulness, nature, villages, lack of traffic and the really down-to-earth-no-frills lifestyle on the island. But if you want to know where to stay/super super splurge in KL for your honeymoon, do post another question and I'll be glad to answer them for you! Happy planning!

MYR48+ per person for buffet breakfast at The Andaman doesnt sound quite right (unless its some kind of a special promotion).

I remember it being close to MYR80 at The Andaman and MYR100 at The Datai (not impressed by either's spread and may be better off ordering from menu). Actually very few major hotels or resorts in Malaysia offer buffet breakfast for MYR48 these days ...

I made another phone call:

breakfast buffets at the Andaman costs 91 RM and at the Datai they charges 92 RM - both plus service charge.

JT, I do hope your package/reservation at the Andaman comes with breakfast buffet, else I wouldn't reccomend that you pay that price for breakfast per person. Take the ala carte room service instead. Happy honeymoon!

It was at around MYR80 per person for the buffet breakfast at the Andaman since approx 5 years ago which was quite hefty back then.

Unless it was pre-GHM days, MYR48 buffet breakfast doesnt exist at The Andaman.

hehe starwood,

hopefully my prices are so ancient! Stayed at the Andaman the last time in 2007 june under this Rainforest Promotion and paid for breakfast one day during the stay. Sadly to say, I wasn't happy with the spread either. RM 90 can buy someone nasi lemak and kopi for over 20 days of breakfast hehe...

JT - if you mention you are on honeymoon, the management will most probably bake a nice chocolate cake for you all (they've done it everytime we visit stay there on our anniversary in June). Beware of the ants and the cheeky monkeys, once they smell anything sweet in the room, they will be everywhere!
