Nairobi to Mombasa by bus? (final destination watamu)

Hi we're a french family with two kids. We'll be in nairobi in august and have rented a place in watamu. Guide books seem to say it's OK to go to mombasa by bus ( choosing a good company) but our contact in nairobi tells us it's unsafe and advise us to take planes or even a personal driver. I don't really know if planes are much safer and have no idea what a personal driver all the way would cost. I"m going to research that but would like to know what do you think of the bus option? Is it really crazy? Our kids are rather used to long bus routes and it's a way of discovering the country...

thanks.

PS: we will get a cab from mombasa to watamu

Hi,

I have done the bus route a few times myself over the years. Sometimes the roads are not too bad and other timers they have been very bumpy. It is safer to go by day rather than overnight and you will see more of the country. As for overall safety it is hard to say. Kenyans are pretty much the worse drivers I have ever seen but its not as if the buses are crashing everyday on the route.

As for African aviation well it is the most dangerous in the world for many reasons. In saying that I do fly between Nairobi and Mombasa these days myself as i find it quicker and MUCH more comfortable.

Must it be the bus? Why not the train?

I travel by bus all the time to MBA, as do other '000s of travellers e'vrday.

Take the luxury "Modern Coast" Oxygen bus (Air Con).

It has 1st Class leather sits in the front.

With the kids, better to take day bus. Roads are near 95% perfect airstrip runway type all the way.

Negar. I am going to go against bus trips in Kenya. There are regular accidents on the roads in Kenya that can be quite horrific. I would personally fly from Nairobi to Malindi and then drive to Watamu.

I second that RWA. Wouldn't get me on one of those death traps for love nor money. I was reading an article about the recent deaths on the highway. There are now gangs that wait along that stretch of the road waiting for accidents. They then pounce, grabbing all they can off the dead and injured. At the Mariakani accident several bodies had to be wrapped in blankets as they had stolen their clothes.

Well, after weighing the pro and cons , we will... take a flight with kenya airlines!

Thank you very much for your help and advice. The next step for us is to decide if we want to spend one day in Mombasa or if we should directly go to watamu . It seems Mombasa is quite interesting but also hectic, and since we have no clue about the city yet ( where to sleep that is safe but not too expensive either, how to go from the airport to that place, if we should book a taxi in advance or jsut take any that is free) It needs some research that I should do... We're actually a family travelling for six months around the world, so I posted my question in Saint Petersburg but meanwhile we were in Tallinn and tonight we are in Riga in Latvia ( and by the way we did it all by bus...), and resarching about Mombasa as we travel in other uknown places with children is quite challenging ( but actually possible with the advice of kind and helpful people like you ). So thank you very much to all those who answered and especially for the newspaper articles that were "decisive" in our final decision (so many accidents in such a short time, the risks are higher than what we thought).
