Yes. The pass costs about the same as one-way fare from Tokyo to Fukuoka stopping at Kyoto. You will save around 15,000 yen.

If checking fares and schedules at http://www.hyperdia.com , note the following:

1. Fukuoka's station is HAKATA ; there's a different Fukuoka Station elsewhere.

2. At the bottom of the Results page, uncheck NOZOMI. This is the fastest Shinkansen, and you cannot use the JR Pass on it.

If you're planning to go to another city, it is usually cheaper to get the JR pass. If you're just staying in one city, you can get a daily pass or buy a return ticket.

You will save a lot of money with the pass. Of course, from Hakata all the way to Tokyo is a long ride.

Daily passes within one city usually don't pay off. Stick to individual tickets of one of the stored value cards. The only exception is probably the Kyoto City Bus Pass which costs 500 Yen. It pays off by the third bus ride.

The JR Pass is a good bargain for you. Fukuoka and Hakata were once twin cities; now it's merged into one. The JR Station has kept its name.

I recommend doing like this:

Dec 30-Fukuoka. See Fukuoka Town for a few hours around Nakasu-Tenjin; at least try their Tonkotsu ramen noodle.

Dec 31 - Kyoto (as temples in the NYE shrines in the NYD would be open and it's their biggest event). Many Tokyo's shopping places will be closed on Jan 1-3.

Jan 1 - Kyoto

Jan 2 - Kyoto stay. Nara day trip and Osaka around Dotombori in the evening.

Jan 3 - Tokyo

Jan 4 - Tokyo

Jan 5 - Fukuoka via a stop at Hiroshima and Miyajima.
