First Time to Japan

Hi! Me and my husband are going to Japan on December 21st for 5 nights. We have no tour booked and are thinking of staying in Tokoyo for 2 nights and taking the train and staying in Koto for 2 nights and then Tokoyo again for 1 night. Any hotels you would suggest? Or should we book a tour? Where should we go? We are open to do whatever people would suggest? Thank you!

No, I think you are on the right track. No need for a tour.

There are many hotels but without knowing the budget it's difficult to recommend. You might search for hotels near a station in Central Tokyo and Kyoto. I would recommend staying in Kyoto three nights (to include a short day trip to Nara) rather than Tokyo two nights, but it's up to you.

You might check out the following deals/options in order to save money:

Very basic recommendations:

Tokyo: Base yourself in Shinjuku and walk around Harajuku, Shibuya, Shinjuku. If you have time, go to Asakusa and Ginza/Yurakucho as well.

Kyoto: a day for Higashiyama Area (Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu, Gion, Nanzenji), and another for Kinkakuji, Nijo Castle, and Arashiyama area (Tenryuji etc). A third day is recommended for Nara's Todaiji, Deer Park, Kofukuji, and an evening for Osaka's Namba and Dotombori.

If you can allow yourself, stay at a nice ryokan in Gion.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate all your help! We are looking for accommodations under 120 if possible for a nice place. :)

BTW, if you would like a nice dinner, do try kobe beef in Kobe. I'm not a meat eater but this is definitely a must. For a set dinner (from appetizers to dessert) I paid about 100USD per person.

Piasandhu, we're travelling around the same time and found some amazing deals on hotels online. The tripadvisor search tool is amazing!

In Kyoto, we found a 4* for $70 per night. :) In Tokyo, we found a 4* for $200 / night in Shinjuku (I understand this is a good price for Tokyo). Averaging those out, you might be able to hit your budget.

HTH.

Thank you everyone for your tips! Poor Grad Student how did you find a 4 star for 70 dollars? Which hotel if you don't mind me asking... I can't find anything for less than 150.
