Christmas in not an official holiday in Japan so there isn't much to see. Shinjuku Southern Terrace has Christmas lights decoration (rather tame) and department stores have trees and lights put up as well. Roppongi might be a bit more happening but remember to take the subway back to Shinjuku before it shuts down.

GO to near Disney land if you want to see any fireworks even you can't enter Disneyland actually. It means you must stay anywhere around the park and see it. because Disneyland ticket on NY eve over the night is sold out already. Manybe Kasai rinkai kouen(one stop before Maihama station for Disney land) is a place to see the fireworks.

On Christmas Day - enjoy the christmas lights - I believe if not all or most turn them off on 12/26 thats when i arrive.

New years eve 12/31

For fireworks - yep disney land.

Roppongi for fun.

But the countdown is held near the tokyo tower - the lights are shut down and lit up again -and balloons are dropped.

I'm going to japan 12/26 to 1/2. I too on the search of happenings - I'll be in narita new years eve.

12/31 I hope something is happening at the narita-san temple.

New years day - I was there five years ago - tokyo is not happening went down to Ginaza- zip nada, not a car on the streets come to find out the meiji shrine is where well wishers and the japanese ring in the new year. if not you'll be wondering where everyone went. I booked my next trip on the day to do the disney scene in fear of nothing to do.

Ps. grab a grab bag if one is sold to you on new years day - its ususally a very geneous offer and a nice treat.

With the 1/1/09 city shut down, might want to do the yuzawa trip 90 minutes from tokyo shinkansen - if you have the budget - i'm sure most of tokyo will be there. check out snow japan webstie.

You could head to Shinjuku by Narita Express on the 'Suica and NEX' combo.

Access to Hotel Century Southern Tower from the Narita Express track at Shinjuku Station:
