Visiting Tokyo and need some advice

Hi I will be visiting Tokyo in December with wife and mother-in-law. Please advise if traveling "free & easy" would be a good idea as we do not speak Japanese. Is it true that tour package is better for the first time non-Japanese speaking tourist?

Thanks in advance

going around tokyo won't be easy for first timers with a family and an in law in tow. depending on what you want to do, getting a guided tour would be the easy way out but of course, you don't get to see and do what you want freely.

I guess it will depend on how much time you are willing to spend on research and also how much of Japan you are covering. Since you are just heading only to Tokyo, it is a lot more simpler. If you are comfortable with travelling with your family without joining a tour, I would think Tokyo is manageable. Similar to other cities except having a more complex transport system and of course the language barrier. So, yes, it's more difficult to do your own in Tokyo than say, Hong Kong or London, but it is definitely not impossible for a first timer.

If you're willing to put in the time, it's not a big deal to do it yourself. Study sites like wikitravel.org/en/Tokyo_%28prefecture%29 and as a lot of questions here.

If you do some planning, it's not a problem at all. First, get an updated guidebook. Second, ask a ton of questions in this forum. Third, bring your laptop and choose a hotel with high speed internet.

hi there...

getting around tokyo is no problem if you use the jr line or the subway systems.. both are fantastic! make sure you get a map of both and they will take you just about anywhere you want to go...

both are cheap and clean and the japanese people will help you in any instance - all u need to do is ask.. they will help u even if they cannot speak english.. they are very obliging people!

Book your hotels in advance especially if you will be here for Christmas eve because that night is very popular for people to stay at a hotel and they start booking now.
