Money - Travellers cheques, debit card, credit card or other

I am going on holiday to Japan in a week. My debit card charges 3% plus £1.5 when lifting money abroad which is pretty awful. Credit card I think is slightly better but can't use that for everything. I have read alot about travellers cheques so was wondering if taking £1,500 in travellers cheques was a good idea. Another possible option is making a bank transfer to a friend who is in Japan and then have them lift money out for us. Some advice would be great.

Sorry the Edit function timed out, so I'm reposting.

Martinimom, you could apply for a "fee and commission free" Credit or Debit card (eg: Citibank).

If you preload either, it's possible to not incur any bank fees & also get the best foreign currency exchange rate.

We would normally only take enough Yen to get through a day or two & withdraw more cash on arriving at Narita & then as required from any international ATM (Post Office, 7-11 store, Citibank). Also take your existing bank & credit cards. You can see other opinions if you try the Search function as the question reoccurs.

I would not inconvenience my friend by using him as a banker when I visit, but that's just me.

Cashing T/C outside of airports takes 20-30 minutes. At the airport 10. Budget your time accordingly. Anyway your questions have been asked and answered numerous times on the forum, including by bluetek in this same thread. Please do a search.
