Danang or Hoi An

Looking for a romantic luxurious beach resort for our anniversary. Have been told either Danang or Hoi An are the best. Can anyone advise which is better and recommend a resort.

If you are happy to spend most of your time in romantic seclusion, then one of the lovely resorts along the stretch of amazing beach in Danang would be great.

the only minor drawback as I see it is that it's a little harder to just pop out to the Ancient Town of Hoi An for a stroll or dinner in one of the hundreds of lovely restaurants. Most of the resorts do have free shuttles but they're not frequent enough so you'd have to catch taxi's back/forth and that does add up ($$)

If you want something special and very luxurious in Hoi An, you could also look at Nam Hai Resort - but be aware, it is VERY expensive. It is close to town and on a lovely beach though.

There are other resorts on the beach in Hoi An such as Palm Garden and Victoria - further up are Golden Sands (no beach to speak of any longer) and Sunrise.

If you have lots of money for this, everyone we know raves about the Nam Thai in Hoi An. But i would check on the time of year you are going. In December, the winds were howling off the sea and no place, no matter how beautiful., would have been worth that, i reckon.

When are you planning the trip? October to the end of January is the monsoon season in Central Vietnam so I would avoid planning a beach holiday during these months, if however you're staying during other months then I would definitely choose Hoi an over Danang.

If you are looking for the ultimate holed up romantic seclusion and are willing to shell out Nam Hai prices it might be worth checking out the new Intercontinental on the Son Tra peninsula, you won't want or need to leave and if their prices are a little more than you were hoping to pay they have a Sunday brunch with free flow Tattinger for about $55 a head which you could incorporate in to a tour of the coastal Monkey Mountain/ Lady Buddha (it's a long way from Hoi An though).

If your trip is in the Spring/ Summer and you want something a bit special on the beach in Hoi An then The Temple Beach House is a stunning hideaway on An bang Beach, think idyllic seclusion in your very own villa at less than half the price of a resort. In the town itself and at cheaper rates the Longlife Riverside Resort is perfectly placed with room rates starting at $55 a night going up depending on the view from your room, each room has masses of space and you get a choice of Jacuzzi or a roll top bath. The Sunrise is worth a peek as they quite often have really good promos on their rooms - lacks a good beach as they are fighting tidal beach erosion but makes up for it in sumptuous everything else and is about 6 kms from the old town.

I'm more in favour of the boutique and quirky and although their are some fabulous resorts along the Hoi An/Da nang stretch, having visited a lot of them recently they all do feel and look the same and a lot of the ones nearer Da Nang are quite empty or fill up with overflows from the casino hotel (Crowne Plaza), villas are nice but the walk the lower priced rooms leaves you feeling a little like you are in some kind of hospital.

Whatever you choose Hoi An is a rather romantic little town, I'm sure you will have a wonderful time.

I just returned from the Hyatt Danang and it was awesome. Utilized both hotel shuttle and cabs. I'm glad we stayed outside of Hoi An; was fun for day trips and dinners but enjoyed the calm and quiet of the beach resort out of town. Also had some wonderful meals at the hotel but it will cost a bit more than a meal in town.

Da Nang is preferable - Hoi An is well bit of a tourist trap.

Britmaveric,

I concur and was a little disappointed. Way too many tailors and knick knack shops. My wife and I kept discussing ideas of how they could get the old Hoi An feel back....will be tuff to do with all the tourist attention. Not gonna lie, I went to a tailor but don't think there is a need for 400+ tailors....how many actually make money? Night time was pretty but got tired of getting hassled by vendors every where we went.
