Danang airport closure

Hi,

Whilst the airport is closed for renovations - which airport (if flying from Ho Chi Minh) would be best to use?

Alternatively would you recommend the train?

Thanks

It's Hue airport that will be closed for renovations, not Danang so you will be able to fly from the south to there.

Thanks Creaking Bones.

Trying to get to grips with name places and geography!

So best to fly to Danang - hoping to go to both Hue and Hoi An so would we be beat to fly into Danang - train to Hue and train back to Hoi An.

Then fly Danang back to Ho Chi Minh.

Thanks

Yes on all counts, but to make the trip to Hue worthwhile you should give yourself two full days there. Here is the the southbound train timetable (from Hue to Danang), scroll down for the northbound one:

Ramblefrog, when we did Hue the airport was also closed for resurfacing. We took a car over the Hai Van Pass from Da Nang for some really scenic views and picture stops. It is fairly easy to organise a car through your hotel or travel agent and should cost around USD50-60 for 2 pax. Alternatively you could get a taxi but with stops and a possible return trip charge it may cost more that a private car. There is also a bus but this goes through a tunnel under the Pass so no great scenery. Coming back to Hoi Ann the train only goes as far as DaNang and then you need a car or taxi to get to Hoi Ann, about 30 minute drive without stops. If you get the train from Hue to Da Nang try to get seats on the left side of the train in the rear half of the carriage to get front facing seats with the best views. Enjoy your trip.

That's a great resource Creaking Bones - so approx 2.5 hours from Hue to Danang and visa versa. 2 days in Hue duly noted.

Greg - thanks for the tips

So when does the Hue airport reopen? I have a flight booked from there to Hanoi on Feb 21. There was no mention of closures when I booked it.

Ramblefrog, IMO you'd be best off taking the train from Da Nang to Hue then a car from Hue to Hoi An, making sure the driver knows to take the Hia Van Pass rather than the tunnel. Since you would need to go by road from Da Nang to Hoi An anyway, it would be most convenient to do the whole trip in the same car rather than car to Hue then train to Da Nang and car to Hoi An.
