Hi Grafton and welcome to Ukraine forum :)
May I please invite your attention, as a newbie to TA, to some forum basics that I hope will help you to get around TA in future?
If you want to address your question to a particular forum contributor/TA member, you can find their name under the picture (called avatar) by the left to their forum post. Say, my present avatar is a cloud in the blue sky, and my member name appears as Cora_v.
The upper line of each forum post is a Topic of the thread. Say, the topic of this thread is “Crimea to odessa 2”, and the subject discussed is the season cancellation of Odessa-Simferopol train.
If you have a question on the topic discussed, you are welcome to post on the running thread. For a totally new topic (like in your case – golf and car rental to Mariupol) it is better to start your own thread. This will attract more attention of forum regulars and allow the discussion to stay focused on the subject.
Should you want to ask a new question about your trip to Ukraine, please, start with general Ukraine forum page here tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g294473-i3662-Ukra… Click on Ask a Question orange button in the middle of the page. Select the most relevant forum for your question from the drop-down menu (Ukraine in general, or any particular city). Title your question (try to be precise; vague titles are not helpful) in the “Subject” line. Type your question(s) in “Your message” box. Click either on Preview to see how your question will appear (you can return to it to edit then, if you wish) or on Submit to post your question on the forum.
Forum posting guidelines are available here tripadvisor.com/help/what_are_the_guidelines…
Please, let know if you have any other questions about using TA.
Now back to your earlier questions.
Golf is very new to Ukraine, so there are not too many golf courses available here. But there is definitely more than one course throughout the entire country. Not a golf player myself, I can not estimate how close to the international standards they are though.
So if you are a keen player and if you are clearly intended to spend part of your journey time playing golf, you should indeed better take your own clubs with you.
But before packing them, do make sure there will be a golf course in the destinations you are planning to stay in.
As for a car rental, I am known for being hesitant to recommend foreigners who are the first-timers in Ukraine and speak no Ukrainian/Russian to drive here.
Poor road quality and low driving culture, ample navigation problems (scarce English signs and often impotent GPS due to fast changes of roads and road signs, in particular), specifics of dealing with road police are just a few factors to mention that make driving in Ukraine quite a challenging experience for an unaccustomed foreigner. For a comfortable getting around your best bet is to hire a driver.
Mind also that English is not widely spoken in Ukraine and in Crimea and Mariupol in particular; so language barrier remains one the most challenging aspects of travelling here. If you speak no Russian/Ukrainian, you should consider either picking up some useful phrases and familiarizing yourself with Cyrillic’s before arrival, or hiring an interpreter.
I’d like to encourage you to read through this forum – you will hopefully find loads of helpful information, and better understand what traveling to Ukraine is like.
I also want to invite your attention to the Top Questions about Ukraine, available in the upper right corner of any Ukraine page tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g294473-i3662-Ukra… Also, if you are going to fly to Kyiv, to the Top Questions about Kyiv, available in the upper right corner of any Kyiv page tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g294474-i3663-Kiev… I gathered there the links to the most frequently asked (on this forum) questions about Ukraine.
Hope this helps.
