Seeking itinerary and transportation advice

Hi!

My husband and I are just beginning to plan our trip to Turkey. We are considering the first 2 weeks of June 2013. We would like to fly into Istanbul and spend a number of days there (4? 5?), then head to the Aegean coast to explore, return to Istanbul to fly back.

I would LOVE suggestions for places to stop, how many days to stay in each...My preliminary idea was to fly to Izmir and go south from there, throw in a ferry ride to an island or two. We are somewhat budget travelers (don't need luxe accommodations), prefer not to be suffocated by tourists, but like a mix of history, nature, water, lots of food, and town life...We don't want to spend too much of our time on the road but do want to hop around a bit. I am having a hard time knowing where to focus. I definitely want to see Ephesus, but that's all I know for now! If we flew into Izmir, what would you suggest? We could consider flying back to Istanbul from a more southern airport.

Also, would you recommend renting a car, or taking buses to the various locations? If you have recommended rental agents/bus operators, that would be great (can also continue to explore forum in this regard). Are there bicycle rentals in any of these spots, if we don't drive?

I have read bad reviews for travel guides in Turkey, but if you think one is decent, please advise.

Thank you!!! So excited!

Fly to Izmir for 2 nights in Selcuk for Ephesus, 1 night Pamukkale, and then bus down to Fethiye for a tour of the Lycian coast (maybe day trips to Rhodes and Meis). Fly back to Istanbul from Antalya.

Scooters rentable in Selcuk, Fethiye, Kas - no problem. Good bus system between all those places.

stoutart, welcome to Turkey.

A visit to Selcuk would only be complete if, besides Ephesus, you visit the wonderful Sirince, Kusadasi, Aphrodisias and if possible Pamukkale. Also in Selcuk, there are are lots of very interesting historic sites to discover. I made a very recent trip to that region as a budget traveller. Have a look at my trip report. good luck,

Thanks for the quick replies! Davidm1, I'm curious what it is about the Fethiye area that you especially like, making you skip bodrum, Marmaris, Datca...right now it's hard for me to tell what the differences are between these seaside spots. How would you describe them in a few words? I will look into your suggestions, thank you!

The Datca peninsula is very nice, but I wouldn't say that Bodrum and Marmaris have enough going for them compared with the spectacular scenery and interesting historical sites of the Lycian coast - http://www.lycianturkey.com/

Fethiye is a very nice Turkish town with plenty of things to see and do, everyone falls in love with Kas, and farther east, Cirali is nice tranquil village on the beach. There are buses every hour travelling along that coast, so transport is easy.

I'd also say don't bother with trips to Greek islands, your time would be better used appreciating that region of Turkey - you can do some great day trips on boats - e.g. a 12 island trip out of Fethiye, and the sunken ruins at Kekova from Kas.

Davidm1, thank you! I think your suggestion is great, so I'm now investigating Fethiye/Oludeniz area for the second part.

I'd avoid Oludeniz for accommodation - too touristy. If you don't want to stay in Fethiye town, I can highly recommend the Villa Rhapsody in Kayakoy, where I spent a very nice time in September.

Enigma: Like Stoutart, we are also planning a family vacation of Turkey. In addition to Istanbul and Selcuk we are looking to add Cappadocia to our itinerary. We will be a party of 4 and are wondering if we should use a guide to escort us in every town or can we get by without a full time guide. Will speaking only English be a problem for communication? At each of these locations can we rent car and be on our own?

Your guidance will be much appreciated.
