How safe Hatyai is?

My friends and I are planning to go to Hat Yai this weekend from Penang via coach. Someone told us that it is not to safe to go there due to bombing. Is there any truth about it? How safe Hat yai now adays?

Also need your advice on nice yet affordable hotel to stay in. Any recommended place to go?

Thanks.

Yes there is truth in that. There have been bombings in Had Yai. I think the last one was a few weeks ago. Many of these are not reported by the Thai press because they are scared of frightening off tourists.

The above poster is sigificantly bending the truth. Why, I do not know. Some of the posts he has made have been outright lies and i feel he has an agenda in promoting people visiting Thailand.

From the Nation, May 28th 2008:

"Seven coordinated bomb attacks left Songkhla's popular tourist centre of Had Yai reeling last night. They injured 13 people, including one women whom police said was in a serious condition.

Police said it was apparent the attacks were aimed at creating chaos rather than killing people or causing extensive damage."

""The last time there were bombings downtown Hat Yai was a few years ago. All quiet since.""

Sorry but not true. HatYai sees regular bombings... reported often in the Thai language press, less often in the English language press. The market and two hotels have been hit several times.
