Well its taken us over 20 years, but we got here! It's interesting to compare your pre-arrival ideas of what a place will be like with what you find when you get here.
Chiang Rai is much bigger and more city-like than we were expecting. Perhaps we had in mind something more like Luang Prabang, which we've just come from. (Fortunately CR is nowhere near as humid as LP at this time of year.) Its much more like Chiang Mai -which is a good thing!
Still trying after 2 nights to come to grips with the geography of the place (missing the symmetry and order of the Chiang Mai old city!). At least we now know there are two clock towers! Will try and get to Orn's bookshop to get a good map tomorrow- if I can find it!
So far we've had an excellent meal at the slightly more upmarket restaurant in the Night Bazaar (great Thai style snake's head fish, and fried prawns in red curry, don't be afraid to eat the heads).
Today took a very clean aircon meter taxi (only 40 baht for 4.5km- much cheaper than a yuk yuk) out to the wonderful Central Plaza to stock up for supplies for dinner in the apartment tonight. Not only do they have a couple of great food courts, where you can get takeaway (think a more modern and less crowded MBK food court) but also in TOPS they have sakei and soju.
So far very good, and still over a week more to enjoy!
