Arusha wood carvings

Any recommendations for reputable shops selling local wood carvings?

Thanks for any info

I assume that you mean shops in Arusha. Go to the Mt. Meru village of shops, there will be at least 50 small shops all selling Mkonde carvings. It will be a couple of blocks down from the Clock Tower roundabout on the street beside the Arusha Hotel, or any taxi driver will take you there. Negotiate for everything. Another place is the Cultural Heritage Centre, look but don't buy there, way overpriced.

Inexpensive wood carvings can be found at the Masai market....mostly of rosewood although many will tell you they are ebony. This market is a warren of small stalls with all imaginable "stuff". Overwhelming as each vendor tries to encourage you to see his/her wares.

The Masai market and the Mt. Meru Village of shops are the same place. You can tell from the weight of the object if it is ebony or not. Ebony is very dense and heavy. You can also tell sometimes if the wood is not all black, ebony is white on the outside and black on the inside so sometimes it will have some lighter colored wood on it, if so it is ebony most likely.
