a) Plenty of operators for tours, they'll fight for you and allow bargaining!

b) Veggie restaurants for tourists are almost unknown in Lanka. Most are for (often Indian/Tamil) locals and not always recommended for tourists due to hygien.

However as a veggie, sometimes travelling alone and sometimes with carnivore Sandya, I've never had troubles with both a-la-carte orders at tourist restaurants and hotel buffets. Quite a few veggie dishes and usually even some completely vegan.

Lot of ppl in SL, Hindus and Buddhist are Veggies - and plenty of vegetarian restaurants, generally speaking - but not sure about Negombo. As the previous post pointed out very few veggie in touristy areas. Most vegetable dishes are cooked - so should be okay to eat. The variety of vegetarian dishes is quite vast - and depending on the restuarant / hotel - if you go to a buffet - pleanty of veggie dishes (just a shame you have to pay full price). I for one that loves meat and seafood at times just eat the veggies at the buffets cause it is so good. Try things like Jack fruit, bread fruit, eggplant, Gotukola (this is a green usually not cooked), bannana blossom - I can go on and on - just food that you get in SL, Costa Rica and places like that. Best thing - just tell the hotel that you are a veggie - and they will take care of you.

Try out Lords Restaurant in Negombo main strip near to the Beach Hotel and Blue Oceanic Hotel the owner is British and has a great selection of veggie dishes cooked to a very high standard. The place is very trendy and priced reasonably. Most of the hotels do veggie foods on the al a carte menus.
